Vehicle: 2020 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring

Hi everyone,

I've been getting a 'BLIS Malfunction' message on my dashboard display for the past few days in my 2020 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring. It comes and goes sometimes, but it's mostly on now, and the blind spot monitoring system isn't working at all.

I've tried cleaning the rear bumper where I think the sensors are, but that hasn't helped. There's no visible damage to the bumper. Has anyone else had this issue with their Aviator or other Lincoln models? What's usually the cause of a BLIS malfunction?

Is this something I can troubleshoot myself, or does it definitely need a trip to the dealer? Thanks in advance for any advice!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A 'BLIS Malfunction' message on your 2020 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring indicates an issue with the Blind Spot Information System. This system relies on radar sensors, typically located behind the rear bumper fascia, to detect vehicles in your blind spots.

Diagnosis & Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Thorough Cleaning: While you've cleaned the bumper, ensure the specific areas directly behind where the BLIS sensors are located (usually on the rear corners of the bumper) are spotless. Even a thin layer of dirt, ice, or a sticker can obstruct the radar signal.
  2. Visual Inspection: Carefully inspect the rear bumper fascia for any subtle damage, dents, or misalignments that could affect the sensor's calibration or line of sight.
  3. Check for Obstructions: Ensure no aftermarket accessories (e.g., bike racks, trailer hitches that are not factory-installed or properly integrated) are interfering with the sensor's field of view.
  4. Battery Disconnect: Sometimes, a simple power cycle can resolve temporary electronic glitches. Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15-30 minutes, then reconnect and test the system.

Potential Causes:

  • Obstructed Sensors: Most common, as mentioned above.
  • Faulty Sensor: One of the radar sensors may have failed internally.
  • Wiring Issue: Damaged or corroded wiring to the BLIS module or sensors.
  • BLIS Module Failure: The control module itself could be faulty.
  • Calibration Issue: If the bumper has been removed or damaged, the sensors might need recalibration.

When to See a Shop:

If cleaning and a battery reset don't resolve the issue, a visit to the dealership is recommended. They can connect to the vehicle's diagnostic port and retrieve specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) related to the BLIS system. Common codes might include:

  • U0xxx Codes: Indicating communication issues with the BLIS module (e.g., U0232 - Lost Communication With Left Side Obstacle Detection Control Module).
  • B1xxx Codes: Indicating internal sensor faults or calibration issues (e.g., B1215 - Left Side Obstacle Detection Sensor Malfunction).

These codes will help pinpoint whether it's a sensor, wiring, or module issue. BLIS system repairs often require specialized tools for sensor replacement and recalibration to ensure proper function, especially after any physical damage or sensor replacement.
