Vehicle: 2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing some really rough shifting in my 2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve, especially at lower speeds and when downshifting. It feels like the transmission is hesitant to engage sometimes, and then it clunks into gear. It's most noticeable between 2nd and 3rd, and then again when slowing down.

I bought it new, and it's got about 45,000 miles on it now. I'm wondering if this is a known issue with the 10-speed transmission in these models? I've heard some chatter about similar problems with other Ford/Lincoln vehicles using this gearbox.

Has anyone else with a 2020 Aviator, or even a different year, experienced this? Is there a recall or a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that addresses this? I'm trying to figure out if this is just 'normal' for this transmission or if I should be pushing my dealership for a more thorough inspection. Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It sounds like you're describing a common concern with the 10-speed automatic transmission (10R80) found in many Ford and Lincoln vehicles, including your 2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve. While some degree of 'adaptive learning' can lead to varied shift feel, consistent rough shifts or hesitation are not normal and should be addressed.

Here's what you should know and do:

  1. Common Causes:

    • Software Calibration: Often, these issues stem from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) software calibration. Manufacturers frequently release updates to refine shift logic and improve smoothness.
    • Adaptive Learning: The transmission's adaptive learning process can sometimes lead to undesirable shift patterns. A reset and relearn procedure might be necessary.
    • Valve Body Issues: Less commonly, internal transmission components like the valve body could be sticking or malfunctioning.
    • Fluid Level/Quality: Incorrect fluid levels or degraded fluid can also contribute to poor shifting.
  2. Check for TSBs and Recalls:

    • Lincoln has issued several Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to 10-speed transmission shift quality. These TSBs often recommend specific software updates or diagnostic procedures to resolve harsh shifts, delayed engagements, or clunking noises. You can ask your dealership to check for any open TSBs or recalls pertaining to your specific VIN.
    • It's crucial to ensure your vehicle's powertrain control module (PCM) and TCM have the latest software updates.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: If the rough shifting is accompanied by a 'wrench' light on your dashboard, a Check Engine Light (CEL), or if you notice any unusual noises (grinding, whining) from the transmission.
    • Persistent Issues: If the problem is consistent and detracts from the driving experience, even without warning lights, it's worth a professional diagnosis.
    • Potential OBD Codes: A diagnostic scan might reveal codes such as P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), P0705 (Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction), or various gear ratio error codes (e.g., P0729-P0736) if the issue is severe.

We recommend scheduling an appointment with a Lincoln dealership. Clearly describe the symptoms and mention that you're aware of potential TSBs for 10-speed transmission shift quality. They can perform a diagnostic scan, check for software updates, and inspect the transmission fluid condition and level. Addressing this promptly can prevent potential long-term damage.
