Vehicle: 2020 Lincoln Corsair Reserve

Hey everyone,

I'm driving a 2020 Lincoln Corsair Reserve, and I've started hearing a distinct thud or clunk from the front end, specifically when I go over small bumps or uneven pavement. It's not a constant noise, but it's definitely noticeable when the suspension is working.

It sounds like it's coming from both sides, but maybe a bit more pronounced on the driver's side. The car only has about 30,000 miles on it, so I'm a bit surprised to be hearing this already. Has anyone else experienced this with their Corsair?

What should I be looking for or asking the mechanic to check? Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A thud or clunk from the front end of your 2020 Lincoln Corsair over small bumps is a common complaint and points to specific areas of the suspension that typically wear out. Given your mileage, it's worth investigating.

Here are the most probable causes:

  1. Worn Sway Bar Links: Similar to the rear, front sway bar links are very susceptible to wear, and their bushings or ball joints can cause a clunking noise when the suspension articulates.
  2. Worn Strut Mounts: The mounts at the top of the struts can degrade, leading to play and noise. You might also hear a popping or groaning when turning the steering wheel at low speeds.
  3. Worn Control Arm Bushings: The bushings that connect the control arms to the chassis can wear out, allowing excessive movement and causing a thud.
  4. Faulty Shock Absorbers/Struts: While less common at 30,000 miles unless there was an impact, a failing strut can sometimes produce noise. Look for signs of fluid leakage.
  5. Loose Components: Occasionally, a loose bolt on a suspension component can be the culprit.

When to See a Shop:

  • It's best to have a professional technician inspect the front suspension. They can perform a thorough visual inspection and a 'shake-down' test to identify loose or worn components.
  • While there are no direct OBD codes for mechanical thuds, if your Corsair has adaptive damping, a fault in that system could potentially trigger suspension-related codes (e.g., C1110 - Damper Control Module Fault), though this is less likely for a simple thud over bumps.
