Vehicle: 2022 Lincoln Corsair Reserve

Hey everyone,

I'm having a problem with the power liftgate on my 2022 Lincoln Corsair Reserve. It's suddenly stopped working correctly. When I try to open it using the button on the key fob, the dash, or the liftgate itself, it just beeps a few times and then does nothing. Sometimes it will move slightly and then stop.

I've checked for obstructions, and there's nothing in the way. I also tried manually opening and closing it, which is difficult. This just started happening yesterday. Has anyone experienced this with their Corsair or other Lincoln SUV? What could be causing this?

Any advice on troubleshooting this before I take it to the dealer would be great. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A power liftgate that beeps but doesn't operate correctly on your 2022 Lincoln Corsair Reserve can be caused by several factors, ranging from simple obstructions to more complex electrical or mechanical failures.

Diagnosis & Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check for Obstructions (Again): Even if you've checked, ensure there's absolutely nothing physically blocking the liftgate's path, including items in the cargo area that might protrude, or debris in the latch mechanism.
  2. Manual Reset Procedure:
    • Manually open the liftgate as far as it will go.
    • Push it down to close it completely and ensure it latches.
    • Try operating it with the power button again.
    • Some models also have a specific reset: open manually, then press and hold the liftgate close button until you hear a chime or see a confirmation on the dash.
  3. Check Liftgate Struts: Visually inspect the power liftgate struts (the arms that lift the gate). Look for any signs of damage, bending, or fluid leaks. If one strut is failing, it can put uneven strain on the motor.
  4. Battery Condition: A weak 12V battery, even if it starts the car, can sometimes cause auxiliary systems like the power liftgate to malfunction due to insufficient voltage during operation. Ensure your battery is in good health.

Potential Causes:

  • Faulty Liftgate Motor/Actuator: The electric motor or actuator that drives the liftgate may be failing.
  • Damaged Liftgate Struts: The power struts contain internal components that can fail, preventing smooth operation.
  • Wiring Harness Issue: A broken or corroded wire in the liftgate's wiring harness (often where it flexes between the body and the gate) can interrupt power or signal.
  • Liftgate Control Module (LGCM) Fault: The dedicated module that controls the liftgate operation could be faulty.
  • Misaligned Latch: The latch mechanism might be misaligned or faulty.

When to See a Shop:

If the basic troubleshooting steps don't resolve the issue, it's best to take your Corsair to a Lincoln dealership. They have diagnostic tools that can communicate with the Liftgate Control Module (LGCM) and retrieve specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). These might include codes like:

  • B1A56: Liftgate Motor Circuit Malfunction
  • B1A57: Liftgate Position Sensor Malfunction
  • B1A58: Liftgate Latch Actuator Malfunction

These codes will help the technician pinpoint whether the issue is with the motor, sensors, wiring, or the control module itself. Given your vehicle's model year, it's likely still under warranty, making a dealership visit the most cost-effective solution.
