Vehicle: 2017 Lincoln MKX Reserve

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2017 Lincoln MKX Reserve, and lately, I've noticed a distinct clunking noise coming from the rear suspension. It happens most often when I go over speed bumps or uneven pavement, especially at lower speeds.

It sounds like something is loose or worn out. It wasn't there before, and it seems to be getting a bit more frequent. Has anyone else experienced this with their MKX or a similar Lincoln model? Any ideas on what it might be before I take it in?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the rear suspension of your 2017 Lincoln MKX can be indicative of several common wear-and-tear issues. It's important to address this promptly to ensure driving safety and comfort.

Here's what to look for and consider:

  1. Worn Sway Bar Links: These are a very common culprit for clunking noises, especially over bumps. The bushings or ball joints on the links can wear out, creating play.
  2. Damaged Shock Absorbers/Struts: If the shocks are failing, they might not dampen suspension movement effectively, leading to noises. Look for fluid leaks around the shock bodies.
  3. Worn Bushings: Control arm bushings or trailing arm bushings can degrade over time, allowing metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement.
  4. Loose Mounts: Check for any loose bolts on suspension components, including the subframe mounts.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you're not comfortable inspecting these components yourself.
  • If the noise is accompanied by noticeable changes in handling, such as excessive body roll or a bouncy ride.
  • If a visual inspection doesn't reveal an obvious cause.

While there aren't specific OBD codes for mechanical suspension noises, a professional can perform a thorough visual inspection and a 'shake-down' test to pinpoint the exact source of the clunk.
