Vehicle: 2017 Lincoln MKX Reserve

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2017 Lincoln MKX Reserve with the 3.7L engine and about 85,000 miles on it. I've been reading a lot about transmission fluid and the whole 'lifetime fluid' claim. Lately, I've noticed the shifts aren't as smooth as they used to be, especially when cold.

I'm pretty handy with a wrench and have done fluid changes on other vehicles before. Is this something I can tackle myself, or is it really a job best left to the dealership? I'm worried about using the wrong fluid or not getting the level right.

What are the recommended intervals for a transmission fluid change on these MKXs? Any specific fluid types I should be looking for? Thanks in advance for any advice!

It's a great question, John, and one we hear often about modern transmissions. While many manufacturers, including Lincoln, refer to transmission fluid as 'lifetime,' it generally means for the expected life of the warranty period, not the vehicle's entire lifespan. For optimal performance and longevity, a transmission fluid service is highly recommended, especially at 85,000 miles.

Here's what you should know:

  1. Recommended Interval: For your 2017 Lincoln MKX, especially with the 3.7L engine, a transmission fluid change is typically recommended every 60,000 to 100,000 miles under normal driving conditions. If you do a lot of towing, heavy city driving, or live in extreme climates, consider doing it closer to the 60,000-mile mark.

  2. DIY vs. Professional: A drain and fill is certainly a DIY-friendly task if you're comfortable working under the vehicle. A full flush, which uses specialized equipment to exchange all the fluid, is usually best left to a professional shop or dealership. For a DIY, a simple drain and fill will replace a significant portion of the old fluid and is a good maintenance step.

  3. Fluid Type: It is absolutely critical to use the correct fluid. For your 2017 Lincoln MKX, you will need MERCON® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid. Using any other type can cause severe damage to your transmission. Always check your owner's manual for the precise specification.

  4. Procedure (Drain & Fill):

    • Ensure the vehicle is level and cool.
    • Locate the transmission drain plug (often on the bottom of the pan).
    • Drain the old fluid into a suitable container.
    • Replace the drain plug with a new washer if specified.
    • Refill the transmission through the dipstick tube or fill port with the exact amount of new MERCON® LV fluid that was drained out.
    • Start the engine, cycle through all gears, and then check the fluid level on a level surface with the engine running and at operating temperature. Adjust as needed.
    • Note: Some transmissions do not have a traditional dipstick and require a specific procedure to check the level via a fill plug or inspection port.
  5. When to See a Shop: If after a fluid change, your shifting issues persist, or you notice any new warning lights (like a 'Service Engine Soon' light, which could indicate a P0700 series transmission code), it's best to have a qualified technician diagnose the issue. They can perform a more thorough diagnostic, including checking for internal wear or sensor issues.
