Vehicle: 2017 Lincoln MKX Reserve

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2017 Lincoln MKX Reserve with the 3.7L engine and I'm experiencing some really frustrating transmission issues. Lately, it's been hesitating quite a bit when shifting, especially from 2nd to 3rd gear. It feels like it's slipping or just taking too long to engage.

Sometimes, the shifts are quite rough, almost like a jolt, which is definitely not the smooth ride I expect from a Lincoln. There's no check engine light on, but I'm worried this could be a sign of a bigger problem. Has anyone else with a similar year/model experienced this? What could be causing it?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Transmission hesitation and rough shifts without a check engine light can be tricky to diagnose, but it's a common concern. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: This is often the simplest cause. Low fluid levels can lead to insufficient hydraulic pressure for proper shifting, while contaminated fluid can cause friction material degradation and poor performance. A fluid and filter change might resolve the issue if caught early.

  2. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Software Glitch: Modern transmissions are heavily reliant on software. A reflash or update to the TCM software can sometimes correct shifting irregularities. This is typically done at a dealership.

  3. Worn Solenoids or Valve Body Issues: Solenoids control the flow of transmission fluid to engage gears. If they are sticking or failing, it can cause delayed or harsh shifts. The valve body itself can also develop issues leading to similar symptoms.

  4. Internal Transmission Wear: While less common in newer vehicles, worn clutch packs or other internal components can lead to slipping and rough engagement. This is usually a more serious and costly repair.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the problem worsens, you hear grinding noises, or the vehicle struggles to move. Continued driving with severe transmission issues can lead to catastrophic failure.
  • Soon: If a fluid check doesn't resolve the issue, or if you're experiencing consistent rough shifting. A professional can perform diagnostic tests, including checking for hidden codes (even without a CEL) and monitoring transmission parameters in real-time. They can also assess fluid condition and recommend further steps.
