Vehicle: 2023 Lincoln Navigator L Reserve

Hello everyone,

I'm facing a serious issue with my 2023 Lincoln Navigator L Reserve. The brake pedal has suddenly become very soft and spongy, almost going to the floor before I get any significant braking power. To make matters worse, both the ABS warning light and the general brake warning light are illuminated on the dashboard.

This just started today, and it's quite alarming. The vehicle has only about 15,000 miles on it. Has anyone experienced anything similar with a newer Navigator or other Lincoln models? What could be causing this, and is it safe to drive?

Any advice is appreciated!

A soft brake pedal accompanied by ABS and brake warning lights on your 2023 Lincoln Navigator is a critical safety issue that requires immediate attention. Do not drive the vehicle if the brake pedal feels significantly soft or goes to the floor. Have it towed to a reputable service center.

Here are the most likely causes:

  1. Low Brake Fluid: The most straightforward cause. A leak in the system or worn pads can cause the fluid level to drop. Check the reservoir level, but if it's low, there's likely a leak somewhere.
  2. Air in the Brake Lines: If air enters the hydraulic system (e.g., after a component replacement or due to a leak), it compresses, leading to a spongy pedal feel. The system will need to be bled.
  3. Faulty Master Cylinder: The master cylinder is responsible for pressurizing the brake fluid. An internal failure can prevent it from building adequate pressure, resulting in a soft pedal.
  4. ABS Module Malfunction: A fault in the ABS control module or its components (e.g., pump, valves) can lead to both a soft pedal and warning lights. This is often accompanied by specific OBD codes.
  5. Brake Line/Hose Leak: A compromised brake line or hose will allow fluid to escape, leading to a loss of pressure and a soft pedal.

When to See a Shop:

  • IMMEDIATELY. This is a severe safety concern. Have your Navigator towed to a dealership or trusted independent mechanic.
  • A technician will check for fluid leaks, inspect the master cylinder, and scan for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Common OBD codes associated with these symptoms can include:
    • C0020 (ABS Pump Motor Control Malfunction)
    • C0040 (Brake Pedal Position Sensor Circuit)
    • C0034 (ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Malfunction) (if a specific sensor is failing, affecting ABS function)
    • P0571 (Brake Switch 'A' Circuit)

Do not attempt to drive the vehicle until it has been professionally inspected and repaired.
