Vehicle: 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition

My 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition recently went into a reduced power mode while driving. I got a bunch of warnings on the screen, including "Propulsion System Limited" and "Service Required." It felt like the car just didn't want to accelerate properly, almost like a limp home mode. I pulled over, turned it off, and on again, but the warnings were still there.

I'm really worried about driving it like this. Has anyone else experienced something similar with their Air Dream Edition? Could this be related to the high-voltage battery system or the motors? Any ideas what could cause this, or what I should check before calling for service?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing a reduced power mode with warnings like "Propulsion System Limited" in your 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition indicates a critical issue within the high-voltage propulsion system. This is the vehicle's way of protecting itself from further damage. Common OBD-II codes associated with such issues in EVs include P0A0F (High Voltage System Interlock Circuit Performance) or P0A7A (Drive Motor Inverter Over Temperature), among others.

What to do:

  1. Safely Pull Over: If you are still driving, find a safe place to pull over immediately and park the vehicle.
  2. Do Not Drive: Driving in reduced power mode can exacerbate the problem and potentially lead to more severe damage or an unsafe situation.
  3. Note Warnings: Take photos of all warning messages on your display for reference.
  4. Contact Roadside Assistance: This type of issue almost always requires professional diagnostic tools and specialized technicians.

Potential Causes:

  • High Voltage Battery Fault: Issues within the battery pack, such as cell imbalances, internal short circuits, or a faulty Battery Management System (BMS).
  • Motor Inverter/Controller Issue: Problems with the power electronics that convert DC power from the battery to AC power for the motors, or vice-versa during regenerative braking.
  • High Voltage Interlock Loop: A fault in the safety circuit designed to ensure all high-voltage components are properly connected and safe.
  • Motor Overheating: While less common for a sudden onset, sustained high power output or a cooling system fault could lead to motor overheating.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately. Do not attempt to diagnose or repair high-voltage systems yourself. These systems carry extremely high voltage and can be very dangerous. Your Lucid is under warranty, and this issue requires a certified Lucid service center with specialized equipment and trained technicians to safely diagnose and repair the fault. Schedule service or utilize Lucid's roadside assistance to transport your vehicle.
