2022 Air Grand Touring - Sudden Range Drop?

Vehicle: 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone, I've got a 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring with about 35,000 miles on it. Lately, I've been noticing a significant drop in my estimated range, even compared to what I used to get in similar conditions. It feels like I'm losing 30-40 miles off the typical full charge range.

I understand battery degradation is normal over time, but this feels a bit sudden. I usually charge to 80-90% at home on a Level 2 charger and only use DC fast charging occasionally.

Has anyone else with a 2022 Lucid Air experienced a noticeable decrease in range that seems a bit too rapid? Any tips or things I should check before taking it in?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Reduced range can be concerning, especially if it feels sudden. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to do:

Possible Causes:

  1. Temperature Fluctuations: Colder weather significantly impacts EV battery performance and range. If you've recently experienced a drop in ambient temperatures, this could be a primary factor.
  2. Driving Style Changes: Aggressive acceleration, higher speeds, and frequent use of climate control can all reduce range. Reflect on any recent changes in your driving habits.
  3. Battery Management System (BMS) Recalibration: Sometimes the BMS might need to recalibrate its state-of-charge estimation. A full charge cycle (charging to 100% and driving until low) can sometimes help.
  4. Software Glitches: An outdated or buggy software version could affect range calculations or battery efficiency. Ensure your vehicle's software is up to date.
  5. Actual Battery Degradation/Cell Imbalance: While less common for a sudden drop, individual battery cell degradation or imbalance can lead to reduced usable capacity.

When to See a Shop:

It's advisable to schedule a service appointment if:

  • The range drop persists regardless of temperature or driving style.
  • You notice any other performance issues, such as slower acceleration or unusual charging behavior.
  • No amount of full charge cycling seems to improve the estimated range.

Diagnostics:

Lucid service technicians can perform a comprehensive battery health check, diagnose the BMS, and check for any underlying fault codes. While there isn't a single OBD code for 'reduced range,' codes related to battery module performance or BMS errors (e.g., P0AA6 - Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault) might be present if there's a serious issue.
