Vehicle: 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing some frustrating charging issues with my 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring lately. Sometimes, when I plug it in, it charges incredibly slowly, like 10-15 kW at a Level 3 DC fast charger, or even worse, it just doesn't initiate charging at all. I've tried different Electrify America stations and even my home Level 2 charger, and the problem persists intermittently.

It's really concerning, especially when I'm on a road trip and relying on fast charging. Has anyone else with a Lucid Air experienced similar problems? What did you do to resolve it? I'm trying to figure out if it's a vehicle issue or something else before I take it to the service center.

It sounds like you're dealing with a common, albeit frustrating, issue that can affect EVs. Charging problems, especially intermittent ones, can stem from several sources. Here’s a breakdown of potential causes and steps you can take:

  1. Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Try Different Chargers and Cables: Since you've already tried multiple public DCFCs and your home Level 2, this helps narrow down if it's a specific charger or your vehicle. Ensure the charging cable is fully seated and free of damage.
    • Restart the Vehicle's Infotainment System: Sometimes a simple software glitch can affect charging communication. A full vehicle reset (if safe and instructed by Lucid support) might also be an option.
    • Check Charging Schedule/Limits: Verify that no charging schedules or maximum charge limits are set in your Lucid Air's settings that might be restricting the charging rate or preventing it from starting.
    • Monitor Battery Temperature: Extremely hot or cold battery temperatures can limit charging speed. The vehicle's Battery Management System (BMS) will protect the battery by reducing power input.
  2. Potential Causes:

    • Software Glitch: The most common culprit for intermittent issues in modern EVs. Updates often address these.
    • Onboard Charger (OBC) or DC-DC Converter Issue: For Level 2 AC charging, the OBC converts AC to DC. For DC fast charging, the DC-DC converter handles power distribution. A fault in either can cause slow or failed charging.
    • Battery Management System (BMS) Malfunction: The BMS monitors battery health, temperature, and charge state. A faulty BMS might incorrectly report battery status or limit charging.
    • Charging Port or Cable Issue: Physical damage to the vehicle's charging port or a faulty charging cable (even if it looks fine) can prevent proper communication or power transfer.
    • External Charger Fault: While you've tried multiple, it's still possible that the chargers you're using have intermittent issues, although less likely if your home charger also has problems.
  3. When to See a Shop: If the issue persists after trying the basic troubleshooting steps, especially if it's happening with both AC and DC charging, it's crucial to schedule a service appointment with a Lucid service center. They have specialized diagnostic tools to read vehicle error codes and pinpoint the exact component causing the problem. There might be specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the charging system that only their tools can access. This is a critical system, and professional diagnosis is essential to ensure your vehicle charges safely and efficiently.
