Vehicle: 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring. Yesterday, while driving, a 'Service EV System' warning popped up on the display, and I immediately noticed a significant reduction in power. It felt like the car went into a limp mode.

I tried restarting the car a couple of times, but the warning persists, and the power limitation is still there. I haven't noticed any strange noises or smells, but it's definitely not driving normally. Charging also seems to be affected; it's either very slow or not initiating properly.

Has anyone else with a Lucid Air encountered this specific warning or similar symptoms? What was the cause, and how was it resolved? I'm trying to gather some information before I call Lucid service, as I'm a bit far from the nearest service center.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

This 'Service EV System' warning combined with reduced power and charging issues on your 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring indicates a significant fault within the high-voltage electrical system or its associated components. This is not a typical DIY fix and usually requires specialized diagnostic tools.

Here's what you should consider:

  1. Check the 12V Battery: While it's an EV, the 12V auxiliary battery powers many control modules. A weak or failing 12V battery can sometimes trigger erroneous high-voltage system warnings. You can check its voltage with a multimeter (should be around 12.6V when off, 13.5-14.5V when charging). If it's low, try charging it or having it tested.
  2. Look for OBD-II Codes (If Possible): While generic OBD-II scanners might not read all proprietary Lucid codes, some advanced EV-specific scan tools might pull generic powertrain codes (P-codes) related to the high-voltage system. Common codes in this scenario might include P0AA6 (Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault) or other codes related to the Battery Management System (BMS), inverter, or motor control unit.
  3. Potential Causes:
    • Battery Management System (BMS) Fault: The BMS monitors the health and balance of the high-voltage battery cells. A fault here can trigger system warnings and limit power.
    • High-Voltage Contactor/Relay Issue: These components connect/disconnect the high-voltage battery from the rest of the system. A fault can prevent proper power delivery.
    • Inverter/Motor Control Unit (MCU) Malfunction: These units convert DC power from the battery to AC for the motors. A fault can lead to reduced power or a complete shutdown.
    • Charging System Fault: Issues with the onboard charger or DC-DC converter can also trigger these warnings and affect charging.
    • High-Voltage Wiring/Insulation Fault: Less common, but a fault in the high-voltage cabling could also cause isolation issues.

When to See a Shop:

Given the nature of the warning (reduced power, charging issues), this is a critical issue that requires immediate professional attention. Do not attempt to drive the vehicle long distances or at high speeds. Contact Lucid service directly. They have the proprietary diagnostic equipment and expertise to safely and accurately diagnose and repair high-voltage system faults. Attempting to diagnose or repair high-voltage systems without proper training and equipment can be extremely dangerous.
