Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring. Last night, while driving home, I suddenly got a 'Service EV System' warning on the main display, and the car immediately went into a reduced power mode. It felt like it lost about half its power, and acceleration was severely limited.

I managed to get it home, but I'm worried about driving it again. I tried turning it off and on a few times, letting it sit overnight, but the warning persists, and the car still feels sluggish. I don't have an OBD-II scanner that can read EV-specific codes, but I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this with their Lucid Air, especially a newer model?

Could this be a battery management system (BMS) issue, or maybe something with the motor controllers? Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated before I schedule a service appointment.

Experiencing a 'Service EV System' warning accompanied by reduced power in your 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring is a critical issue that requires immediate attention. This warning indicates that the vehicle's high-voltage system or powertrain control module has detected a fault that could impact safety or performance. While a generic OBD-II scanner might not show specific EV codes, a dedicated EV diagnostic tool would likely reveal a P-code related to the high-voltage system.

Here are potential causes and steps you should take:

  1. High-Voltage Battery System Fault:
    • Causes: Issues with the Battery Management System (BMS), individual battery cell degradation, voltage imbalances, or internal short circuits within the battery pack.
    • OBD-II Code Example: P0A00 (EV Powertrain Control Module Malfunction) or P0AFA (High Voltage System Isolation Fault) are common categories for such issues.
  2. Motor Inverter/Controller Malfunction:
    • Causes: The inverters convert DC battery power to AC for the electric motors. A fault here can directly lead to reduced power or complete motor shutdown. This could be due to sensor errors, overheating, or internal component failure.
  3. High-Voltage Cabling or Connector Issues:
    • Causes: Less common, but loose or damaged high-voltage cables or connectors can interrupt power delivery and trigger warnings.
  4. Cooling System Problems:
    • Causes: Overheating of the battery pack, motors, or inverters due to a fault in the liquid cooling system can force the vehicle into limp mode to prevent damage.

When to See a Shop:

Given the severity of a 'Service EV System' warning and reduced power, you should not attempt to drive your vehicle further than absolutely necessary. This condition can indicate a serious fault that could lead to further damage or, in rare cases, safety risks. Your Lucid Air should be transported to an authorized Lucid service center via flatbed tow truck as soon as possible. They have the specialized diagnostic equipment and trained technicians to safely and accurately diagnose and repair high-voltage system faults. Do not attempt to reset the system multiple times, as this may mask critical diagnostic data.
