Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring. Lately, when I plug it in, especially at public DC fast chargers, the charging session either stops prematurely after a few minutes, or it charges incredibly slowly, like 10-15 kW when it should be much higher.

Sometimes I get a 'Charging Fault' message on the screen, but it's not consistent. I've tried different charging stations and even different cables, but the problem persists. It's making long trips a real headache.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Lucid Air? Is there a known software glitch or something I should be looking for? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing charging interruptions or significantly reduced charging speeds on your Lucid Air can be concerning, especially with a newer vehicle. This issue often points to a problem within the vehicle's electrical and charging systems. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and troubleshooting steps:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Try a Different Charger/Location: While you've tried different stations, ensure you've tested both AC (Level 2) and DC (Level 3) chargers if possible. Sometimes, a specific charger type or location might have compatibility issues or be faulty itself.
  2. Inspect Charging Port and Cable: Carefully check your vehicle's charging port for any debris, bent pins, or signs of damage. Also, inspect your charging cable for any cuts, kinks, or damage to the connectors.
  3. Perform a Soft Reset: A vehicle's infotainment or even the entire system can sometimes benefit from a soft reset to clear temporary glitches. Consult your Lucid owner's manual for the exact procedure, which often involves holding down certain buttons.
  4. Check for Software Updates: Ensure your Lucid Air's software is up to date. Over-the-air (OTA) updates often include fixes for charging performance and stability.

Potential Causes:

  • Faulty Charging Station/Cable: Although you've tried multiple, it's still a common external factor.
  • Onboard Charger (OBC) Malfunction: The vehicle's internal component responsible for converting AC power to DC for the battery could be failing.
  • Battery Management System (BMS) Issue: The BMS monitors and controls battery charging and discharging. A fault here could trigger safety protocols that stop or slow charging.
  • Charging Port Sensor/Actuator: Issues with the locking mechanism or sensors within the charging port can prevent proper communication or connection.
  • High Voltage (HV) System Fault: Less common, but any fault in the HV system could impact charging.

Relevant OBD Codes (if a scan tool is used):

If a diagnostic scan is performed, you might encounter codes related to charging system performance, such as:

  • P0D2A: DC Charging System Performance
  • P0D2B: DC Charging System Voltage/Current Out of Range
  • P0D2C: DC Charging System Communication Error

When to See a Shop:

If the issue persists after trying the basic troubleshooting steps, or if you consistently receive 'Charging Fault' messages, it's crucial to schedule a service appointment with a Lucid service center. This type of problem often requires specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact component causing the fault, whether it's the onboard charger, BMS, or another electrical component. Continuing to charge with a persistent fault could potentially lead to further issues or inefficient charging.
