Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I'm a new owner of a 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring, and I've been absolutely loving the car so far. However, I've run into a frustrating issue with the charging port that's making me a bit nervous about long-term reliability.

Sometimes, when I plug in, the charging port doesn't seem to lock properly. I'll push the connector in, and it feels like it seats, but the locking mechanism doesn't engage. Other times, it locks, but then charging will start and stop intermittently, or just fail to initiate altogether. This happens with both my home Level 2 charger and public DC fast chargers.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Lucid Air, especially a 2023 model? I'm worried it might be a hardware issue with the charging port itself, or perhaps a software glitch. Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated before I schedule a service appointment.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common frustration with EV charging, especially when the vehicle's communication or physical components aren't perfectly aligned. For your 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring, an intermittent charging port lock or charging failure can stem from several sources. Here’s a breakdown of potential causes and troubleshooting steps:

  1. Initial Checks & Troubleshooting:

    • Inspect the Port: Carefully examine your Lucid's charging port for any debris, dust, or foreign objects that might obstruct the connector or the locking pin mechanism. A compressed air can might help clear it out. Also, check your charging cable's connector for damage.
    • Try a Different Charger: If possible, test with a different Level 2 charger at home or a different public DC fast charger. This helps determine if the issue is with your vehicle or the specific charging station/cable.
    • Vehicle Restart: Sometimes, a simple vehicle restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Consult your owner's manual for the proper procedure to perform a soft or hard reset if applicable.
  2. Common Causes:

    • Software Glitch: The vehicle's Battery Management System (BMS) or charging controller software might be experiencing a temporary bug preventing proper communication with the EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) or controlling the locking mechanism.
    • Charging Port Mechanism: There could be a physical issue with the locking pin, its sensor, or the actuator within the charging port assembly itself. This is a common wear point or potential manufacturing defect.
    • EVSE Compatibility/Fault: While you mentioned it happens with multiple chargers, there's a slight chance of a broader compatibility issue or an underlying fault with the charging stations you've tried.
    • Onboard Charger (OBC) or DC-DC Converter: Less likely for a locking issue, but if charging consistently fails to initiate, internal charging components could be at fault.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Persistent Issue: If the problem continues after trying the basic troubleshooting steps with multiple chargers.
    • Error Messages: If your Lucid's dashboard displays any specific error messages related to charging or the charging system.
    • Safety Concern: Any signs of overheating, unusual smells, or visible damage around the charging port should prompt immediate service.

Lucid service centers are equipped to diagnose these types of electrical and mechanical issues. They can check for any relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or software updates that address known charging port problems for your 2023 Air Grand Touring. It's best to schedule an appointment to have them thoroughly inspect the charging port assembly and run diagnostics on the vehicle's charging system.
