Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I'm having a persistent issue with my 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring and I'm hoping someone here might have experienced something similar. Lately, when I try to charge, the charging port often doesn't seem to lock properly, or if it does, the charging speed is incredibly slow, sometimes only pulling 1-2 kW on a Level 2 charger that usually delivers 11 kW.

I've tried multiple charging stations, both at home with my Wallbox Pulsar Plus and at public Electrify America stations. The problem seems to follow the car, not the charger. Sometimes I get a 'Charging System Malfunction' message on the dash, but it's intermittent. I've tried restarting the car and checking the cable connections, but no luck. Has anyone encountered this with their Lucid Air? Could it be a software glitch or something more serious with the charging port mechanism or onboard charger?

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating charging issue on your 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring. This problem, involving the charging port not locking and slow charging, can stem from several potential causes within the vehicle's electrical and electronics system.

Here are some steps and potential causes to consider:

  1. Inspect the Charging Port: Carefully examine the charging port on your Lucid Air for any visible debris, bent pins, or physical damage. Even a small obstruction can prevent the cable from seating correctly or the locking mechanism from engaging. Use a flashlight if necessary.
  2. Try a Different Cable: Although you've tried different stations, ensure you've also tried a completely different charging cable if possible. A faulty cable, even if it looks fine, can cause communication issues between the car and the charger, leading to slow charging or non-engagement.
  3. Vehicle Software Update: Ensure your Lucid Air's software is up to date. Manufacturers frequently release updates that address known bugs related to charging, battery management, and vehicle communication. Check your infotainment system for available updates or contact Lucid service to confirm.
  4. Vehicle Reset: Perform a soft reset of your vehicle's system. Consult your owner's manual for the specific procedure for your Lucid Air model year. This can sometimes clear temporary electronic glitches.
  5. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): While the 'Charging System Malfunction' message is a good indicator, a more specific OBD-II scanner (if compatible with EV systems) might reveal specific codes. Common codes related to EV charging issues might include:
    • P0D27: Charge Port Inhibit Circuit Performance
    • P0D28: Charge Port Latch Circuit Performance
    • P0AA6: Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault (less likely for just port issues, but indicates a high-voltage system problem)
    • P0D00-P0DFF: A range of codes specific to EV charging system faults.

When to See a Shop:

If the issue persists after trying the above steps, especially if you're consistently getting the 'Charging System Malfunction' message or if the charging port physically isn't locking, it's crucial to schedule an appointment with a certified Lucid service center. This problem could indicate a fault with:

  • The charging port assembly itself (including the locking mechanism or internal sensors).
  • The onboard charger (OBC), which converts AC power to DC for the battery.
  • The Battery Management System (BMS), which controls charging parameters.
  • A wiring harness issue within the high-voltage system.

These components require specialized diagnostic tools and expertise to properly diagnose and repair. Continuing to force charging with a faulty system could potentially lead to further damage or safety concerns.
