Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring. Occasionally, especially when accelerating moderately or merging onto the highway, the car will suddenly feel like it loses a significant amount of power. It's not a complete shutdown, but a noticeable reduction in acceleration and responsiveness.

Almost immediately after this happens, I get a 'Reduced Performance' warning message on the driver display. If I pull over, turn the car off, and then back on, it usually clears up, but it's happened a few times now and is quite unsettling. The car has about 15,000 miles on it.

Has anyone else with a Lucid Air, particularly a 2023 model, encountered anything similar? What was the diagnosis or fix? I'm planning to contact service, but wanted to see if this is a known issue.

Experiencing intermittent power loss and a 'Reduced Performance' warning in your 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring is a serious concern that warrants immediate professional attention. This type of symptom typically points to an issue within the high-voltage powertrain system.

Here are the likely causes and recommended steps:

  1. Potential Causes:

    • Inverter/Motor Controller Issues: The inverter converts DC power from the battery to AC power for the electric motors. A fault here can directly impact motor performance and power delivery. This is a common culprit for sudden power reductions in EVs.
    • Electric Motor Sensor Faults: Issues with speed sensors or temperature sensors within one of the electric motors can cause the system to limit power to prevent damage.
    • High-Voltage Battery Management System (BMS) Anomaly: While less common for intermittent issues, a BMS fault could incorrectly report battery health or voltage, leading the vehicle to enter a 'limp mode' for protection.
    • High-Voltage Contactor Malfunction: The contactors connect and disconnect the high-voltage battery from the rest of the powertrain. If one is sticking or failing, it can cause intermittent power interruptions.
    • Software Glitch: In some cases, a software bug could trigger false warnings or incorrect power management. However, given the 'Reduced Performance' message, a hardware component is more probable.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: Do not delay. Intermittent power loss can be dangerous, especially during critical maneuvers like merging or overtaking. Continuing to drive with this issue could also potentially lead to further damage to expensive powertrain components.
  3. Recommended Actions:

    • Document Everything: Note the exact conditions when the issue occurs (speed, acceleration level, battery state of charge, temperature, etc.) and any specific messages displayed.
    • Check for Diagnostic Messages: While Lucid vehicles don't use standard OBD-II codes in the same way gasoline cars do, your service center will be able to pull detailed diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the vehicle's internal systems. These codes are crucial for pinpointing the exact fault.
    • Schedule Service: Contact Lucid service as soon as possible. Explain the symptoms thoroughly. They will need to perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan and potentially inspect the high-voltage components. Do not attempt to diagnose or repair high-voltage systems yourself.

It's critical to have this issue professionally diagnosed and repaired to ensure your safety and the longevity of your vehicle.
