Vehicle: 2024 Lucid Air Touring

Hi all, I've got a 2024 Lucid Air Touring with about 8,000 miles. Recently, I've been having trouble with charging, both at home on my Level 2 charger and at public DC fast chargers. At home, it charges much slower than usual, sometimes only pulling 3-4 kW instead of the expected 11 kW. At DC fast chargers, it often fails to initiate charging or disconnects unexpectedly after a few minutes.

I've tried different cables and different charging stations, but the issue persists. The charging port light sometimes blinks red, but no specific error message pops up on the screen. It's becoming a real hassle to reliably charge the car.

Is anyone else with a newer Lucid experiencing inconsistent or slow charging issues? Could this be a problem with the vehicle's charging port or onboard charger?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Inconsistent or slow charging can be incredibly frustrating for an EV owner. Here's a breakdown of common culprits for your 2024 Lucid Air Touring:

Possible Causes:

  1. Vehicle Charging Port: The charging port itself can develop issues, such as damaged pins, a faulty latching mechanism, or internal wiring problems. A blinking red light often indicates a communication or safety fault at the port.
  2. Onboard Charger (OBC): The OBC converts AC power from Level 1/2 chargers into DC power for the battery. A malfunctioning OBC can lead to slow or failed AC charging. For DC fast charging, the OBC is bypassed, but related control modules can still be involved.
  3. Battery Management System (BMS): The BMS controls the charging process, monitors battery health, and can limit charging speed if it detects an issue with battery temperature, voltage, or cell balance.
  4. Charging Protocol Communication: The vehicle needs to communicate effectively with the charging station. Issues with this communication (e.g., handshake failures) can prevent charging or lead to premature disconnections.
  5. High Voltage Contactor Issues: Relays that connect the battery to the charging system can sometimes fail or stick, impeding power flow.

When to See a Shop:

Given that you've tried different cables and stations and the issue persists, this strongly suggests a vehicle-side problem. You should schedule a service appointment immediately to prevent further inconvenience and potential battery issues.

Diagnostics:

Technicians will:

  • Inspect the charging port for physical damage.
  • Perform diagnostic scans for relevant OBD codes such as:
    • P0D2A: DC Charging System Malfunction
    • P0D00: Charging System Performance
    • P0D06: Onboard Charger Performance
    • P0A0F: High Voltage System Interlock Circuit Performance
  • Test the onboard charger and related high-voltage components.
