Vehicle: 2024 Lucid Air Touring

My new 2024 Lucid Air Touring has been experiencing some really annoying issues with the infotainment system. The main center display occasionally freezes completely, becoming unresponsive to touch. Sometimes it even goes completely black for a few seconds before restarting, or it just stays black until I park and restart the car.

It's a brand new car, and this is happening way too often. It affects navigation, music, and climate controls, making the driving experience quite frustrating. I've tried soft resetting it by holding down certain buttons, but the problem keeps coming back.

Is this a known issue with the newer Lucid models, or do I have a faulty unit? What could be causing this display problem?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system glitches like freezing or black screens can be disruptive, especially in a new vehicle like your 2024 Lucid Air Touring. These issues often stem from a combination of software and hardware factors within the vehicle's electrical architecture.

  1. Initial Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Perform a Full System Reset: Consult your owner's manual for the procedure to perform a full infotainment system reset. This is often more comprehensive than a soft reset and can clear temporary software bugs.
    • Check for Software Updates: Ensure your vehicle's software is fully up-to-date. Lucid frequently releases over-the-air (OTA) updates that address known bugs and improve system stability. Navigate to the software update section in your vehicle's settings.
  2. Potential Causes:

    • Software Glitches: The most common cause for intermittent freezing or black screens is a bug in the infotainment software. This can be due to a specific application, a memory leak, or a general system instability.
    • Loose Wiring/Connections: A loose or corroded electrical connection to the display unit or the infotainment control module can cause intermittent power loss or data transmission errors, leading to the screen going black or freezing.
    • Overheating: While less common, if the infotainment control unit is overheating, it might temporarily shut down or reduce performance to prevent damage. This could be exacerbated by prolonged use or high ambient temperatures.
    • Faulty Display Panel or Control Module: In some cases, the display panel itself or the underlying control module (the computer running the infotainment system) could be defective, requiring replacement.
  3. Relevant OBD Codes (less specific for infotainment, but look for communication errors):

    • U0140: Lost Communication With Body Control Module
    • U0155: Lost Communication With Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module
    • B1000: Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Malfunction (a generic code that might indicate an issue with the infotainment ECU).

When to See a Shop: If the problem persists after performing resets and ensuring your software is updated, or if the screen goes completely black and doesn't recover, it's time to contact a Lucid service center. This is especially important for a new vehicle under warranty. They have specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint whether the issue is software-related, a wiring fault, or a defective hardware component.
