Vehicle: 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring, and lately, I've been experiencing some weird electrical glitches. Sometimes the infotainment screen takes a while to boot up, and I even had a "Service Required" message pop up briefly, though it went away.

I'm wondering if it could be the 12V battery. I know EVs have a big traction battery, but they also have a smaller 12V battery for accessories and starting up the main systems. I'm pretty handy and would like to tackle this myself if it's not too complicated.

Has anyone here replaced the 12V battery on their Lucid Air? Where is it located, and what kind of battery does it take? Any special tools or procedures I should be aware of? I want to make sure I don't mess anything up.

Thanks for any advice!

You're absolutely right to consider the 12V battery, Sarah! Even though EVs are powered by a large high-voltage battery, they still rely on a conventional 12V battery to power the vehicle's auxiliary systems, such as the infotainment, lights, power windows, and to 'boot up' the high-voltage system contactors. A failing 12V battery is a common cause of seemingly random electrical issues in many modern vehicles, including EVs.

Here's what you need to know about replacing the 12V battery in your 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring:

  1. Symptoms of a Failing 12V Battery:

    • Slow or intermittent infotainment screen boot-up.
    • Random warning lights or error messages (e.g., 'Service Required').
    • Inconsistent operation of accessories (windows, locks).
    • Vehicle failing to 'start' (engage the high-voltage system).
  2. Location:

    • The 12V battery in the Lucid Air is typically located in the frunk (front trunk), under a protective cover. You'll need to open the frunk and likely remove a plastic trim piece or panel to access it.
  3. Battery Type:

    • Lucid Air vehicles generally use an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) 12V battery. It's crucial to replace it with a battery of the same type and similar specifications (CCA - Cold Cranking Amps, and Ah - Amp-hours) to ensure compatibility with the vehicle's charging system. Consult your owner's manual or a Lucid service center for the exact specifications.
  4. Replacement Steps (General Guide):

    • Safety First: Ensure the vehicle is off and parked on a level surface. Wear appropriate safety gear (gloves, eye protection).
    • Access: Open the frunk and carefully remove any covers or trim panels obstructing access to the 12V battery.
    • Disconnect Negative Terminal: Using a wrench, loosen and remove the negative (-) terminal cable first. Tuck it away from the battery.
    • Disconnect Positive Terminal: Next, loosen and remove the positive (+) terminal cable.
    • Remove Hold-Down Clamp: Locate and remove the battery hold-down clamp or strap.
    • Remove Old Battery: Carefully lift out the old battery. They can be heavy!
    • Clean Tray: Clean any corrosion or debris from the battery tray.
    • Install New Battery: Place the new AGM battery into the tray.
    • Secure: Reinstall the hold-down clamp securely.
    • Connect Positive Terminal: Connect the positive (+) terminal cable first and tighten it.
    • Connect Negative Terminal: Connect the negative (-) terminal cable last and tighten it.
    • Reassemble: Replace any removed covers or trim panels.
    • Recalibration: After replacement, you might need to drive the vehicle for a short period or perform a simple reset (check your owner's manual) for all systems to fully recalibrate.
  5. When to See a Shop:

    • If you're uncomfortable working with electrical systems or lifting heavy batteries.
    • If the symptoms persist after replacing the 12V battery, indicating a deeper electrical issue.
    • If you encounter any error codes that don't clear after the replacement and a short drive.
    • If you cannot find the correct replacement battery or are unsure about the specifications.

While this is a DIY-friendly task for many, always prioritize safety and consult your vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions for your 2022 Lucid Air.
