Drivetrain Malfunction on 2022 Air Dream Edition, car in limp mode

Vehicle: 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition

Just had a scary experience with my 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition (approx 25,000 miles). While driving on the highway, a 'Drivetrain Malfunction' warning light came on, and the car immediately went into a reduced power 'limp mode.' I could barely accelerate, and it felt very sluggish.

I pulled over, turned the car off and on again, and the warning light disappeared, but the car still felt a bit off. I drove it home carefully. I haven't checked for OBD codes yet, but I'm worried about what this could mean.

Has anyone else had their Lucid go into limp mode with a drivetrain warning? What was the cause, and how serious was it?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A 'Drivetrain Malfunction' warning followed by limp mode is a serious indication of an issue within your EV's high-voltage propulsion system. While restarting the car sometimes clears the immediate warning, the underlying problem likely remains.

Possible Causes:

  1. Inverter/Motor Control Unit (MCU) Failure: The inverter converts DC power from the battery into AC power for the electric motors. A fault in the inverter or its control unit can severely impact motor operation, triggering limp mode.
  2. Electric Motor Malfunction: Issues with the electric motor itself, such as internal shorts, sensor failures, or overheating, can cause a drivetrain error.
  3. High Voltage Battery System Fault: Problems within the high-voltage battery (e.g., cell imbalance, contactor issues, internal shorts) can restrict power delivery to the drivetrain.
  4. High Voltage Interlock Circuit: This safety circuit ensures all high-voltage connections are secure. A fault here can prevent the high-voltage system from operating correctly.
  5. Transmission/Gear Reduction Unit: While less common for an EV to have a 'transmission' issue in the traditional sense, problems with the single-speed gear reduction unit can also trigger drivetrain warnings.

When to See a Shop:

Immediately. Do not ignore this warning, even if it clears temporarily. Limp mode is a protective measure to prevent further damage. Driving the vehicle could exacerbate the problem or lead to a complete breakdown. Arrange for your Lucid to be towed to a service center.

Diagnostics:

Technicians will perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan for stored and pending OBD codes. Common codes associated with these symptoms include:

  • P0A0F: High Voltage System Interlock Circuit Performance
  • P0AA6: Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault
  • P0A3F: Drive Motor A Inverter Performance
  • P0A40: Drive Motor A Position Sensor Circuit
  • P0A7A: Hybrid Battery Pack Temperature Sensor Circuit

They will also inspect the high-voltage cabling, connectors, inverter, and electric motors.
