Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a pretty significant issue with my 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring lately. Over the past few weeks, both my Level 2 home charging and DC fast charging speeds seem to have dropped considerably. It's taking much longer to get a full charge, and I'm also seeing a noticeable reduction in my estimated range, even when fully charged.

For example, my usual 240V home charger used to top me off overnight without issues, but now it barely adds 50% in the same timeframe. Public DC fast chargers that used to give me great speeds are now much slower, often maxing out at less than half of what I'm used to. I've tried different charging stations and even a different home charger, but the problem persists.

Has anyone else with a 2023 Lucid Air, especially the Grand Touring trim, experienced anything similar? Could this be a software bug, a battery issue, or something else entirely? I'm trying to figure out if this is a known problem before I schedule a service appointment. Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Experiencing reduced charging speed and range on a relatively new EV like your 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring can be concerning. This issue often points to a few common culprits, ranging from software to hardware. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps you can take:

  1. Software Glitch or Update: Modern EVs rely heavily on software for battery management and charging protocols. A recent over-the-air (OTA) update might have introduced a bug, or your vehicle might be due for an update that addresses known charging issues. Check your vehicle's infotainment system for available updates.
  2. Battery Management System (BMS) Recalibration: The BMS monitors and manages your battery's health and state of charge. Sometimes, the BMS can get out of sync, leading to inaccurate range estimates and suboptimal charging. Performing a full charge cycle (charging to 100% and then driving until low, then recharging) can sometimes help recalibrate it.
  3. Charging Port or Cable Issue: Inspect your vehicle's charging port for any debris, damage, or corrosion. Also, check your charging cables (both home and public) for any signs of wear or damage. A faulty cable can significantly limit charging speeds.
  4. Thermal Management System: The battery's temperature plays a crucial role in charging efficiency. If the battery is too hot or too cold, the vehicle's thermal management system will limit charging speed to protect the battery. This is usually more prevalent in extreme weather conditions.
  5. Recall or Technical Service Bulletin (TSB): It's possible there's a known issue for your specific model year and trim. Check the NHTSA website or contact Lucid service directly to inquire about any active recalls or TSBs related to charging or battery performance for the 2023 Lucid Air.

When to See a Shop:

If the problem persists after trying basic troubleshooting steps like checking for software updates, inspecting cables, and attempting a BMS recalibration, it's highly recommended to schedule a service appointment with Lucid. They have specialized diagnostic tools to read specific fault codes (though not always presented as standard OBD-II codes in EVs for battery/charging systems) and perform in-depth battery health checks. Ignoring persistent charging issues can potentially lead to further complications or impact your vehicle's long-term battery health.
