Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a significant drop in charging speed on my 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring lately. Both at home on my Level 2 charger (ChargePoint Home Flex) and at public DC fast charging stations, the car seems to be taking much longer to reach full charge than it used to. For example, a 20-80% charge at a 350kW Electrify America station that used to take around 20-25 minutes is now pushing 40 minutes or more.

I've tried different cables, different charging stations, and even rebooted the car's infotainment system, but the issue persists. The car isn't throwing any error messages on the dash, and the battery health seems fine according to the vehicle's diagnostics. It's becoming a real inconvenience, especially on longer trips.

Has anyone else with a Lucid Air, particularly a 2023 model, experienced similar issues? Is this a known software glitch, or could it be something more serious with the charging system? Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Slow charging on an EV like your 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring can be frustrating, but there are several common causes and troubleshooting steps you can take before needing a shop visit.

  1. Initial Troubleshooting & Checks:

    • Check Charging Schedule: Ensure no charging schedules or limits are inadvertently set in your Lucid's infotainment system or the Lucid app that might be throttling the charge rate.
    • Preconditioning: For DC fast charging, ensure your vehicle's battery is preconditioned. Using the navigation to a DC fast charger will often initiate this, optimizing battery temperature for faster charging. Cold or extremely hot battery temperatures can significantly reduce charging speeds.
    • Charger/Cable Integrity: While you've tried different ones, visually inspect your home charger's cable and the vehicle's charging port for any signs of damage, debris, or corrosion.
  2. Common Causes for Reduced Charging Speed:

    • Software Glitches: EV charging protocols are complex and heavily reliant on software. A recent over-the-air (OTA) update could introduce a bug, or an older software version might not be optimizing charging. Check your Lucid app or vehicle settings for available updates.
    • Charging Station Derating: Public DC fast chargers can sometimes derate their output due to high usage, internal faults, or grid limitations. Trying multiple stations helps rule this out.
    • Battery Management System (BMS) Optimization: The BMS constantly monitors battery health. As the battery ages or if it detects an imbalance, it might reduce charging speed to protect the battery, even if no explicit error is shown.
    • Onboard Charger (OBC) or DC-DC Converter Issue: For Level 2 AC charging, the car's onboard charger converts AC to DC. For DC fast charging, the DC-DC converter manages the high voltage. A fault in either of these components could limit charging speed. These issues typically require specialized diagnostics.
  3. When to See a Shop: If the issue persists after trying the above steps, especially if it affects both AC and DC charging, it's time to contact Lucid Service. They have proprietary diagnostic tools that can read specific manufacturer diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the charging system, battery management, and power electronics. While generic OBD-II scanners might not show codes for these specific EV systems, Lucid's tools can pinpoint issues with components like the OBC, BMS, or high-voltage contactors. Describe your observations in detail to help them diagnose the problem efficiently.
