Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing some frustrating inconsistencies with my 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring lately. Specifically, the DC fast charging speeds seem to fluctuate wildly, even at the same Electrify America stations I've used before. Sometimes it charges super fast, other times it's significantly slower, and it's not always tied to the battery's state of charge.

On top of that, I feel like my overall range has taken a hit. I'm not getting the same estimated mileage I used to, even with similar driving conditions and temperatures. It's making me a bit anxious about longer trips. Is this a known issue with the 2023 models, or could it be a sign of early battery degradation? I've only had the car for about a year and a half.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems with their Lucid Air? Any advice on what to check or if there are any software updates or TSBs I should be aware of? Thanks in advance for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Inconsistent charging speeds and perceived range reduction are common concerns for EV owners, and several factors can contribute to these issues. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps you can take:

  1. Check for Software Updates: Lucid frequently releases over-the-air (OTA) software updates that can improve battery management, charging protocols, and overall vehicle efficiency. Ensure your 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring is running the latest software version. Outdated software can sometimes lead to suboptimal performance.

  2. Environmental Factors and Battery Conditioning:

    • Temperature: Extreme hot or cold weather significantly impacts battery performance and charging speeds. The battery management system (BMS) will condition the battery to an optimal temperature for charging, which can take time and affect initial charging rates.
    • State of Charge (SoC): DC fast charging rates typically taper off as the battery's SoC increases. Charging from 10% to 50% will generally be much faster than from 80% to 100%.
    • Pre-conditioning: Ensure your vehicle is pre-conditioning the battery for DC fast charging by setting your charging station as a destination in the navigation system before arrival.
  3. Charging Station Performance: Public DC fast chargers can vary in their actual output due to grid demand, station maintenance, or concurrent usage by other vehicles. Try different stations or locations to see if the issue persists.

  4. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): While you might not see a dashboard warning, a deeper diagnostic scan could reveal stored trouble codes related to the battery management system (BMS) or charging system. A professional scan tool can access these codes.

  5. Review Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and Recalls: Check with your Lucid service center or the NHTSA website for any open TSBs or recalls related to battery performance, charging, or range for your 2023 Lucid Air. These often address known issues and provide solutions.

When to See a Shop: If you've checked for software updates, considered environmental factors, and tried different charging stations, and the issues with inconsistent charging or significant range reduction persist, it's advisable to schedule a service appointment with a Lucid service center. They can perform a comprehensive diagnostic check of your battery pack, charging system, and related components to identify any underlying hardware or software issues.
