Vehicle: 2024 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hello everyone,

I just got a 'Low Coolant' warning on the dash of my 2024 Lucid Air Grand Touring. I know EVs still use coolant for battery thermal management and power electronics, but I'm not sure what type of coolant Lucid specifies.

Can I just top it off with any universal coolant, or is there a specific type I need to get? Also, is a low coolant warning something I should be immediately concerned about, or can I wait a few days to get it checked out?

Any advice would be great!

A 'Low Coolant' warning on your 2024 Lucid Air Grand Touring is definitely something to pay attention to immediately. The thermal management system is vital for your battery's health, performance, and longevity. Running low on coolant can lead to overheating, which can cause significant damage to the battery pack and power electronics.

Specific Coolant Type:

  1. DO NOT use universal or conventional coolants. Lucid vehicles require a specific type of long-life, silicate-free, phosphate-free, OAT (Organic Acid Technology) or HOAT (Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) coolant, often dyed a specific color (e.g., blue or pink/purple) by the manufacturer. Using the wrong type can lead to corrosion, system blockages, and damage to seals and hoses within the high-voltage cooling system.
  2. Consult your owner's manual for the exact specification and brand recommended by Lucid. It's best to use Lucid-branded coolant or an approved equivalent.

What to Do:

  1. Safety First: If the warning light is accompanied by any performance reduction or a 'stop safely' message, pull over immediately and contact Lucid Roadside Assistance.
  2. Check Level (Carefully): If safe, you can visually inspect the coolant reservoir. Ensure the vehicle is cool before opening the cap, as the system can be pressurized and hot fluid can cause burns.
  3. Top-Off (If Confident): If you can confirm the exact coolant type and have it on hand, you can carefully top it off to the 'MAX' line. However, a low coolant level often indicates a leak, not just evaporation.

Causes of Low Coolant:

  • Leaks: The most common cause is a leak in the cooling system (hoses, radiator, pump, or reservoir).
  • Evaporation: While less common in sealed systems, some minor evaporation can occur over many years.
  • System Issue: Rarely, a sensor malfunction could trigger the warning, but assume a real issue first.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: A low coolant warning, especially if persistent or dropping quickly, warrants an immediate visit to a Lucid service center.
  • Diagnostic Codes: The vehicle's onboard diagnostics might log a code related to the thermal management system, such as a P0AXX series code (e.g., P0A80: Replace Hybrid Battery Pack, or manufacturer-specific codes related to coolant pump performance or temperature sensors). A service center can read these codes and perform a pressure test to locate any leaks.
  • Unknown Coolant Type: If you're unsure about the correct coolant, do not add anything. Let a professional handle it.

Prompt attention will prevent potential costly damage to your Lucid's critical components.
