Vehicle: 2025 Lucid Gravity Touring

I just got a "Low Coolant" warning message on the dash of my 2025 Lucid Gravity. This is concerning as it's a relatively new vehicle, and I wouldn't expect this so soon. I checked the reservoir under the hood, and it does look a bit low, below the minimum mark.

I know EVs have complex thermal management systems for the battery and motors, so I'm hesitant to just top it off with any coolant. Is this something I can top off myself, or does it require a specific type of coolant and a special procedure?

I haven't noticed any visible leaks or overheating symptoms, but I don't want to risk any damage to the high-voltage battery or powertrain by ignoring the warning or using the wrong fluid.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A "Low Coolant" warning on your 2025 Lucid Gravity is a critical alert that requires immediate attention. The thermal management system in an EV is vital for maintaining optimal operating temperatures for the battery pack, power electronics, and electric motors, directly impacting performance, longevity, and safety.

Potential Causes for Low Coolant:

  1. Minor Leak: Even small, slow leaks in hoses, connections, or components can lead to a gradual drop in coolant level.
  2. Air Pockets: Sometimes, after initial filling or service, air pockets can remain in the system, which eventually work their way out, causing the level to drop.
  3. Component Failure: While less common in a new vehicle, a failing pump, hose, or radiator could lead to coolant loss.

Important Considerations & Why DIY is Not Recommended:

  1. Specialized EV Coolant: Do NOT top off with standard automotive coolant. The thermal management system in your Lucid Gravity uses a highly specialized EV-specific coolant, typically a long-life OAT (Organic Acid Technology) or HOAT (Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) type, often dyed blue or pink/purple. Mixing with conventional green or orange coolants can cause severe chemical reactions, leading to corrosion, clogging, and significant damage to the delicate components of the EV cooling system, potentially voiding your warranty.
  2. Complex System: EV thermal management systems are intricate, often involving multiple cooling loops, pumps, and valves controlled by the vehicle's computer. Proper bleeding and filling require specialized tools and procedures to ensure no air pockets remain.

When to See a Shop (Immediately): It is highly recommended to have your Lucid Gravity inspected by a certified Lucid service center immediately. Driving with low coolant in an EV's thermal management system can lead to serious issues, including:

  • Battery Overheating: This can cause irreversible battery degradation, reduced range, power limitations, or even a safety risk.
  • Powertrain Damage: Overheating of electric motors or power electronics can lead to expensive component failures.

A Lucid technician can:

  • Properly diagnose the exact cause of the low coolant level.
  • Identify and repair any leaks using specialized equipment.
  • Refill the system with the correct type and amount of coolant using a vacuum fill process to prevent air pockets.
  • Check for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the thermal management system (e.g., P0A00 series codes for powertrain cooling or battery thermal management) and ensure the system is functioning optimally.
