Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've been having some frustrating issues with my 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring's charging. Lately, when I plug it in, sometimes the charging port doesn't seem to lock properly. I'll get a 'Charging Fault' message on the dash, or it just won't initiate charging at all.

Even when it does start, I've noticed charging speeds are significantly slower than usual, both on my home Level 2 charger and at public DC fast chargers. It's really impacting my daily routine and range anxiety is starting to creep in. I've tried using different cables and chargers, but the problem persists.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Lucid Air? Could it be a software glitch, a problem with the charging port itself, or something more serious with the battery management system? Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Sarah,

It sounds like you're dealing with a common, albeit frustrating, set of issues related to EV charging. Slow charging and charging port malfunctions can stem from several electrical and electronic components. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps you can take:

  1. Charging Port Actuator/Sensor: The locking mechanism in the charging port relies on an actuator and sensors to confirm a secure connection. If these components are faulty or obstructed, the vehicle's system might prevent charging or report a fault. This is a common point of failure in many EVs.
  2. Charging Cable/EVSE Communication: While you've tried different cables, ensure they are in good condition. The vehicle and charger communicate extensively during the charging process. A glitch in this communication, potentially due to a faulty cable or even the EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) itself, can lead to slow charging or no charging.
  3. Battery Management System (BMS) Glitch: The BMS is responsible for monitoring and controlling the battery's health and charging process. A temporary software bug or a more serious issue within the BMS could cause it to limit charging speed or prevent charging altogether as a protective measure.
  4. Vehicle Software: Like any modern vehicle, the Lucid Air relies heavily on its software. A recent update, or even a pending one, could introduce bugs affecting charging. Try performing a soft reset of your vehicle's infotainment system (refer to your owner's manual for the specific procedure).

Diagnostics & When to See a Shop:

  • Check for OBD Codes: While Lucid vehicles often use proprietary diagnostic tools, a generic OBD-II scanner might reveal codes related to charging, such as P0AA6 (Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault) or P0D27 (Charging System Performance). However, for Lucid-specific issues, a dealer's diagnostic equipment is usually necessary.
  • Inspect the Charging Port: Visually inspect the charging port for any debris, bent pins, or signs of damage. Ensure it's clean and clear.
  • Try a Different Charger/Location: If possible, try charging at a different public DC fast charger or a friend's Level 2 charger to rule out issues with your home setup.

Given the intermittent nature and the 'Charging Fault' message, it's highly recommended to schedule a service appointment with a Lucid service center. They have the specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint whether the issue is with the charging port assembly, the BMS, or a software-related problem. Continuing to charge with a potential fault could, in rare cases, lead to further issues.
