Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing some really frustrating charging issues with my 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring lately. It seems like both DC fast charging and even my home Level 2 charging are significantly slower than they used to be, and definitely slower than advertised.

For example, at a 350kW Electrify America station, I'm barely getting over 100kW, and sometimes it dips much lower. At home, my 48A Level 2 charger used to give me a full charge overnight, but now it's taking much longer. I've tried different chargers and cables, but the problem persists.

Has anyone else with a 2023 Lucid Air experienced similar issues? Is this a known bug or something I should be concerned about? Any tips or solutions would be greatly appreciated before I schedule a service appointment.

Hi Sarah,

Slow charging can be a frustrating experience, especially with a premium EV like the Lucid Air. Several factors can contribute to reduced charging speeds. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps you can take:

  1. Software Updates: Ensure your 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring has the latest software. Over-the-air (OTA) updates often include optimizations for charging performance and bug fixes. Check your vehicle's infotainment system for available updates or visit a service center if you're unsure.

  2. Battery Preconditioning: For optimal DC fast charging speeds, the battery needs to be at an ideal temperature. When navigating to a DC fast charger using the vehicle's navigation system, your Lucid Air should automatically precondition the battery. If you're not using navigation, the battery might be too cold (or too hot in extreme conditions) for peak charging rates.

  3. Charger Limitations & Congestion: Not all '350kW' chargers deliver their full advertised power consistently. The actual output can vary based on the station's health, grid demand, and how many other vehicles are charging simultaneously. Try different charging stations from various providers if possible.

  4. Charging Cable & Port Issues: While you've tried different cables, a subtle issue with the vehicle's charging port or an internal cable could still be a factor. Inspect the charging port for any debris or damage.

  5. Vehicle Diagnostics: Your Lucid Air has sophisticated diagnostic systems. Check the vehicle's messages or notifications for any alerts related to the charging system. While there might not be a specific OBD-II code for 'slow charging,' internal system faults could be logged.

When to See a Shop: If you've checked for software updates, tried multiple reliable charging stations, ensured battery preconditioning, and still experience significantly reduced charging speeds, it's time to schedule a service appointment with Lucid. This could indicate an issue with the onboard charger, battery management system (BMS), or other high-voltage components that require professional diagnosis and repair.
