Lucid Air Grand Touring not charging at home or public stations - charging port issues?

Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

My 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring has suddenly started having issues with charging. I plug it into my home Level 2 charger, and sometimes it just won't initiate charging, or it will start and then stop after a few minutes. I've tried multiple public Level 2 and DC fast chargers, and I'm seeing similar intermittent problems.

It's really frustrating because I depend on this car daily. The charging port light sometimes flashes red, but not always. Is anyone else experiencing this? Could it be a problem with the car's charging port itself, or maybe the onboard charger?

I've checked my home charger, and it works fine with other EVs. I'm worried about getting stranded if I can't reliably charge.

Intermittent charging issues can be frustrating and point to several potential electrical problems within your Lucid Air's charging system. Here's a breakdown of common causes and steps to take:

  1. Check Charging Cable and Port:

    • Inspect your charging cable for any visible damage, kinks, or bent pins. Try using a different cable if available.
    • Examine the vehicle's charging port for debris, corrosion, or bent pins. A flashlight can help. Gently clean with compressed air if needed, but avoid inserting anything metal.
  2. Restart the Vehicle's Infotainment System: Sometimes a soft reset of the vehicle's electronics can resolve communication glitches. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct procedure to restart the infotainment system or perform a full vehicle reset (if safe to do so).

  3. Monitor Dashboard Messages and OBD Codes: Pay close attention to any error messages displayed on your Lucid's dashboard during a failed charging attempt. If you have an OBD-II scanner capable of reading EV-specific codes, look for codes such as:

    • P0D2A: EVSE Communication Error
    • P0D2C: Onboard Charger Malfunction
    • P0D2E: Charging System Voltage Low
  4. Potential Causes:

    • Onboard Charger (OBC) Failure: The OBC converts AC power from Level 2 chargers to DC power for the battery. A faulty OBC can lead to charging interruptions or failures.
    • Battery Management System (BMS) Glitch: The BMS controls the charging process. A software bug or hardware issue in the BMS could cause it to prematurely stop charging.
    • Charging Port Assembly Issue: Damage to the physical charging port or its internal sensors can prevent proper communication with the EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment).
    • HV Battery Issues: Less common for intermittent charging, but internal battery faults could trigger the BMS to stop charging for safety.

When to See a Shop: If the issue persists after checking cables and performing resets, or if you consistently receive error messages or OBD codes related to the charging system, it's crucial to schedule a service appointment with a Lucid service center. This is not a problem that can typically be fixed at home, as it involves high-voltage components and complex diagnostics. Driving with an unreliable charging system can leave you stranded and potentially cause further damage.
