Vehicle: 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a really annoying clunking or rattling sound coming from the front suspension of my 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring. It's most noticeable when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or just uneven road surfaces at lower speeds. It sounds like something is loose.

It's not constant, but frequent enough to be concerning. The car only has about 25,000 miles on it, and I wouldn't expect suspension issues this early, especially on a premium vehicle like the Air.

Has anyone else with a Lucid Air experienced similar noises? What was the cause, and how was it resolved? Any advice on what I should check before taking it to the service center?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking or rattling noise from the front suspension of your 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring is definitely something to investigate promptly, as it can indicate various issues ranging from minor annoyances to potential safety concerns.

Here are common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Worn or Loose Sway Bar Links/Bushings: These are very common culprits for clunking noises, especially over uneven terrain. The links connect the sway bar to the suspension, and their bushings can wear out, causing play.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle frame. Worn or cracked bushings in these arms can lead to excessive movement and noise.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: If the noise is more pronounced when turning or going over bumps, the strut mounts or their bearings could be worn.
  4. Loose Components: Sometimes, something as simple as a loose bolt on a suspension component, a brake caliper, or even a splash shield can cause rattling.
  5. Ball Joints: Worn ball joints, which allow the steering knuckle to pivot, can also produce clunking sounds.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediate Action: If you notice any change in steering feel, vehicle handling, or braking performance accompanying the noise, schedule service immediately. These could be signs of a more critical failure.
  • Persistent Noise: If the noise persists after a basic visual inspection, or if you're uncomfortable inspecting it yourself, it's best to take your Lucid Air to an authorized Lucid service center. Given the advanced and integrated nature of Lucid's suspension systems, specialized tools and expertise are often required for proper diagnosis and repair.

OBD Codes: For purely mechanical suspension noises like clunking, standard OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics II) codes are generally not triggered. OBD-II primarily monitors engine, transmission, and emissions systems. However, if your Lucid Air has an adaptive or air suspension system and the issue were related to an electronic sensor, compressor, or control module within that system, specific manufacturer-defined chassis codes (C-codes) could potentially be stored. In your case, a mechanical inspection is the primary diagnostic method.
