Vehicle: 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing significantly reduced charging speeds on my 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring lately. It's happening both at home on my Level 2 charger and at various public DC fast charging stations. Instead of getting the expected rates, it feels like it's capping out much lower, making longer trips a real headache.

I've tried different cables and even different charging stations, but the issue persists. There aren't any obvious error messages popping up on the infotainment screen, just a slower-than-usual charging rate. Has anyone else with a Lucid Air, especially a 2022 model, encountered this problem? What did you do to resolve it?

I'm wondering if it's a software glitch, a battery issue, or something with the onboard charger. Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated before I schedule a service appointment.

Reduced charging speed on an EV, especially a premium one like the Lucid Air, can be frustrating and points to a few potential issues that are common in the EV space. Here's a breakdown of possible causes and steps you can take:

  1. Software Glitch: Early model year EVs, including the 2022 Lucid Air, can sometimes experience software bugs that affect charging protocols. A simple infotainment system reset or a full vehicle power cycle (if safe and recommended by Lucid) might clear a temporary software hiccup. Ensure your vehicle's software is up to date, as Lucid frequently releases updates that address such issues.

  2. Charging Equipment Issues:

    • Home Charger: While you've tried different cables, ensure your home Level 2 EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) is functioning correctly. Check its indicator lights for any fault codes. Sometimes, a dedicated circuit breaker trip can cause intermittent issues.
    • Public Chargers: Public DC fast chargers can be inconsistent. Try a different brand or location of DCFC if possible. If the issue is only at public chargers, it might point to compatibility or station-specific problems rather than your vehicle.
  3. Battery Management System (BMS) or Battery Health: The BMS is crucial for monitoring and controlling battery charging. If the BMS detects an anomaly (e.g., cell imbalance, temperature extremes), it might intentionally limit charging speed to protect the battery. Extreme ambient temperatures (very hot or very cold) can also cause the BMS to throttle charging.

  4. Onboard Charger (OBC) or DC-DC Converter: The OBC handles AC (Level 2) charging, converting it to DC for the battery. A fault in this component could limit AC charging speeds. For DC fast charging, the vehicle's DC-DC converter and high-voltage system manage the power flow. A problem here could affect DCFC rates.

When to See a Shop: If the problem persists after trying different chargers and ensuring your vehicle's software is current, it's definitely time to schedule a service appointment with Lucid. They have specialized diagnostic tools to read internal fault codes (which may not always display as generic OBD-II codes) and pinpoint the exact component causing the issue. Mention any specific conditions under which the slowdown occurs. Lucid service can check for any relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or recalls related to charging performance for your 2022 Air Grand Touring.
