Vehicle: 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've had my 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring for about two years now, and I'm starting to notice a significant drop in DC fast charging speeds. When I first got it, I could consistently hit very high rates, especially at Electrify America stations. Now, it seems to cap out much lower, even when the battery is at an optimal state of charge (e.g., 20-30%) and the battery preconditioning is active.

Is anyone else experiencing this with their Lucid Air? I'm wondering if it's normal battery degradation over time, or if there might be a software issue or even a hardware problem with the charging system. It's making longer trips a bit more inconvenient than they used to be.

I've tried different chargers and even different brands of charging stations, but the result is largely the same. The car still drives great, and the range seems mostly consistent, but the charging speed is a real concern. Any insights or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Reduced DC fast charging speed in an EV like your 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring can be concerning, but it's often a combination of factors, some normal and some potentially requiring attention.

  1. Normal Battery Degradation & BMS Management:

    • Cause: All lithium-ion batteries experience some degradation over time and charge cycles. The Battery Management System (BMS) also becomes more conservative with charging speeds as the battery ages to protect its longevity. This is particularly noticeable at higher states of charge (above 80%) but can also affect peak speeds at lower SOCs after a couple of years.
    • When to See a Shop: If the reduction is sudden and drastic (e.g., 50% or more drop in peak speed) or if you're also experiencing a significant, unexplained drop in range (more than 10-15% from original), it warrants a diagnostic check.
  2. Software Updates:

    • Cause: Lucid frequently releases over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Sometimes, these updates can optimize charging algorithms, which might slightly alter charging curves to improve battery health long-term. Ensure your vehicle's software is up to date. Check the vehicle's settings for pending updates.
    • When to See a Shop: If an update seems to have introduced a bug, or if your car isn't receiving updates, a service center can manually update the software and check for related issues.
  3. External Factors:

    • Cause: Ambient temperature plays a huge role. Very cold or very hot weather can significantly reduce charging speeds as the BMS tries to keep the battery within optimal temperature ranges. Also, the specific charging station's health and power delivery can vary.
    • When to See a Shop: If you've tested across various temperatures and multiple reliable charging stations and the issue persists, it points to a vehicle-specific problem.
  4. Diagnostic Check:

    • Cause: While standard OBD-II codes are less relevant for proprietary EV systems, your Lucid has internal diagnostics. A service center can connect to the vehicle's system to read detailed battery health reports, charging system logs, and identify any specific fault codes related to the high-voltage battery or charging components.
    • When to See a Shop: It's recommended to schedule a service appointment with Lucid to have them perform a full diagnostic scan. They can assess the battery's state of health (SOH) and check for any issues with the onboard charger or DC-DC converter that might be limiting power intake. Mention the specific symptoms and the model year of your vehicle.
