Vehicle: 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone here has experienced something similar. My 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring suddenly went into a reduced power mode yesterday while I was driving on the highway.

A 'Powertrain Malfunction' warning light came on, and the car felt significantly less responsive. I pulled over, turned it off, waited a few minutes, and turned it back on, but the warning persisted, and the power reduction was still noticeable.

It's been driving fine up until now, no strange noises or anything. The battery was at about 60% charge. Has anyone encountered this with their Lucid Air? What was the fix? I'm a bit concerned as it's a relatively new car.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing a 'Powertrain Malfunction' and reduced power in your 2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring is a serious concern that requires immediate attention. This indicates a potential issue within the high-voltage system, electric motors, or power electronics.

Potential Causes:

  1. Inverter/Power Electronics Failure: The inverter is crucial for converting DC battery power to AC for the electric motors. A fault here can directly lead to reduced power and system warnings.
  2. Electric Motor Malfunction: While less common, an issue with one of the electric motors (e.g., sensor failure, internal winding problem) could trigger this. Lucid Air models have multiple motors.
  3. Battery Management System (BMS) Fault: The BMS monitors the battery's health, temperature, and cell balance. A critical fault or communication error within the BMS, or an issue with a high-voltage contactor, can limit power output.
  4. High-Voltage System Isolation Fault: There might be an issue with the insulation of high-voltage cables or components, leading to a ground fault detection.
  5. Software Glitch: Less likely for persistent issues, but sometimes a software anomaly can trigger false warnings or put the vehicle into a 'limp home' mode.

When to See a Shop:

Given the nature of this warning and the reduced power, it is imperative to have your vehicle professionally diagnosed by a Lucid service center as soon as possible. Do not attempt to drive long distances or ignore this warning.

  1. Contact Lucid Service Immediately: Schedule an appointment with your nearest Lucid service center. Explain the symptoms, including the specific warning message and the year/model/trim of your vehicle.
  2. Avoid Further Driving if Unsafe: If the vehicle feels unsafe to drive, or if the warning persists and power is severely limited, arrange for a tow to the service center. Continuing to drive with a powertrain malfunction could potentially cause further damage.
  3. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Lucid service technicians have specialized diagnostic tools that can read manufacturer-specific DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) from the vehicle's various control modules. These codes will pinpoint the exact subsystem or component that is reporting a fault, which is crucial for accurate repair.
  4. Inspection and Repair: The service center will likely perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan, inspect the high-voltage system, check the electric motors and inverters, and review the battery system logs. They will then recommend the necessary repairs, which could range from a software update to component replacement.
