Vehicle: 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing a strange issue with my 2023 Lucid Air Grand Touring lately. Over the past week, I've noticed a significant reduction in the regenerative braking power. It feels like the car isn't slowing down as much when I lift off the accelerator, and I have to use the friction brakes more often.

To top it off, a 'Brake System Malfunction' warning light has popped up on the dash a couple of times, though it sometimes disappears after a restart. The pedal feel also seems a bit different, maybe a bit softer. Has anyone else with a Lucid Air, especially a 2023 model, encountered anything similar? What was the fix? I'm a bit concerned about driving it like this.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing reduced regenerative braking combined with a warning light on your 2023 Lucid Air is a serious concern that warrants immediate attention. Regenerative braking is crucial for efficiency and also plays a role in overall braking performance.

Here are potential causes and steps:

  1. Understanding Regenerative Braking Issues:

    • Software Glitch: EVs rely heavily on complex software. A temporary glitch can sometimes cause systems to misbehave.
    • Brake System Sensor Fault: Sensors like wheel speed sensors or brake pedal position sensors are vital for both regenerative and friction braking. A fault here can confuse the system.
    • Low 12V Battery: While the main traction battery powers the car, the 12V auxiliary battery powers many control modules. A weak 12V battery can cause a cascade of seemingly unrelated electrical issues and warning lights.
    • Brake Fluid Level/Pressure: Although less common for regen issues directly, a problem with the hydraulic brake system (low fluid, pressure sensor fault) can trigger general brake warnings and impact how the car manages braking.
    • Motor/Inverter Issue: In rare cases, a problem with the electric motor or its inverter, which handles the energy conversion for regeneration, could be the root cause.
  2. Initial Steps to Take:

    • Check 12V Battery: If you have access to a voltmeter, check the 12V battery voltage. A reading below 12.4V when off could indicate an issue.
    • Restart Vehicle: Sometimes a full power cycle (turning the car off, waiting a few minutes, then restarting) can clear temporary software errors.
    • Observe Other Symptoms: Note if there are any other warning lights, unusual noises, or changes in driving dynamics.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: Given the 'Brake System Malfunction' warning and reduced braking performance, it is highly recommended to contact Lucid service immediately. Do not delay.
    • Safety Risk: Reduced braking capability is a significant safety risk. If the warning light is persistent or you feel the braking is compromised, avoid driving the vehicle.
    • Diagnostic Codes: A Lucid service center will be able to connect to the vehicle's diagnostic system and pull specific trouble codes. Common OBD-II codes related to brake system issues might include:
      • C00XX series: General brake system faults.
      • P0AXX series: Related to hybrid/EV propulsion system, which could include regenerative braking components.
      • U0XXX series: Communication errors between modules.

Lucid vehicles are sophisticated, and issues like this often require specialized diagnostic tools. It's best to let trained technicians handle the diagnosis and repair to ensure your safety and the longevity of your vehicle.
