Vehicle: 2021 Mazda CX-30 Premium

Hello Mazda community,

I'm having an intermittent but concerning issue with my 2021 Mazda CX-30 Premium. Every now and then, I get a "Blind Spot Monitoring Malfunction" message pop up on the dash. Sometimes, it's just that, but other times it's accompanied by the Smart Brake Support (SBS) system also becoming unavailable, and even the Lane Keep Assist (LKA) light coming on.

It seems to happen randomly, not tied to specific weather conditions or driving scenarios. Usually, after I turn the car off and restart it, the warnings clear, but they always come back eventually. There's no persistent check engine light, but these safety system warnings are making me nervous.

Has anyone with a newer CX-30 experienced this? Is this a known software glitch, a sensor issue, or something more serious? Any advice on what I can check or what might be causing this before I head to the dealership?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent warnings for multiple advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Smart Brake Support (SBS), and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) on your 2021 Mazda CX-30 Premium can be concerning. These systems are interconnected, and a fault in one can often affect others. Since there's no persistent Check Engine Light, the issue likely lies within the ADAS network rather than the powertrain.

Here's what to consider:

  1. Sensor Obstruction/Cleanliness:
    • Radar Sensors: BSM typically uses radar sensors located behind the rear bumper. Ensure the bumper area is clean and free of dirt, ice, or debris. Even a thin layer of grime can interfere.
    • Front Radar/Camera: SBS and LKA often rely on a front-mounted radar sensor (behind the Mazda emblem) and/or a camera (at the top of the windshield). Check these areas for cleanliness and obstructions.
  2. Battery Health: Modern vehicles with complex electronic systems are very sensitive to voltage fluctuations. A weak or failing 12V battery, even if it can start the car, can cause intermittent electronic glitches and warning lights. Have your battery tested for its state of charge and overall health.
  3. Wiring and Connections: Intermittent issues can often be traced to loose or corroded electrical connections. While difficult to check without specialized tools, a professional might inspect the wiring harnesses leading to the BSM radar units and the front radar/camera.
  4. Software Glitch/Update: Sometimes, these issues are resolved with a software update from Mazda. It's possible there's a known bug that a dealership can address by flashing the relevant control modules.
  5. Sensor Calibration: If a sensor has been bumped or misaligned (e.g., after a minor fender bender, even if not obvious), it could cause these malfunctions. ADAS sensors require precise calibration.

When to See a Shop:

Given the interconnected nature and safety implications of these systems, and the fact that they are intermittent, it's highly recommended to take your 2021 Mazda CX-30 to a Mazda dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools (like Mazda's M-MDS) that can read specific fault codes from the ADAS control modules, which generic OBD-II scanners cannot access. They can also check for any applicable technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates related to these issues. Do not delay, as these systems are critical for safety.
