2022 CX-30 Select: TPMS Light On After Tire Rotation

Vehicle: 2022 Mazda CX-30 Select

Hi everyone, I recently had a tire rotation done on my 2022 Mazda CX-30 Select, which has about 25,000 miles. Shortly after, the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) warning light came on and has stayed on. I've checked all tire pressures, and they are all at the recommended 36 PSI.

I tried the manual reset procedure from the owner's manual (driving for a bit, then holding the TPMS button), but the light is still on. Is there a specific trick for the CX-30 after a rotation, or could something else be wrong? I don't think it has individual sensors in each wheel, but I'm not sure.

It's common for the TPMS light to illuminate after a tire rotation, especially on Mazdas that use an indirect TPMS system. Your 2022 Mazda CX-30 likely uses an indirect system, which means it doesn't have individual sensors in each tire. Instead, it uses the ABS wheel speed sensors to detect differences in wheel rotation speed, which can indicate a low tire pressure.

Here's what's likely happening and how to address it:

  1. Indirect TPMS Recalibration: When tires are rotated, the system needs to re-learn the new positions and rotation characteristics. The manual reset procedure you attempted is usually the correct method. Ensure you followed it precisely:
    • Inflate all tires to the recommended pressure (usually found on a sticker in the driver's door jamb).
    • With the ignition on (engine off or running), press and hold the TPMS SET button (often located near your left knee, below the steering wheel) until the TPMS warning light blinks twice and a chime sounds.
    • Drive the vehicle for at least 15-20 minutes at speeds above 15-20 mph. The system needs this driving time to re-learn the tire parameters.
  2. Check Tire Pressures Again: Even if you checked them, re-verify with a reliable gauge. A slight difference can sometimes trigger the light. Ensure all four tires are at the exact same recommended pressure.
  3. Battery Disconnect (Last Resort): Sometimes, disconnecting the car's battery for 15-20 minutes can reset various modules, including the TPMS. Be aware this will reset other settings like radio presets.

When to See a Shop:

  • Persistent Light: If the TPMS light remains on after multiple attempts at the reset procedure and extended driving, it indicates a system fault that requires professional diagnosis.
  • ABS/Traction Control Light: If the TPMS light is accompanied by an ABS or Traction Control warning light, it could point to an issue with the wheel speed sensors themselves, which are integral to the indirect TPMS.
  • Diagnostic Scan: A Mazda dealership or an independent shop with a capable diagnostic scanner can read specific TPMS codes (though not standard OBD-II P-codes) to pinpoint the exact issue. It could be a faulty wheel speed sensor or a problem with the ABS module itself.
