Vehicle: 2021 Mazda CX-30 Select

Hello everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2021 Mazda CX-30 Select. This morning, both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control (TCS) warning light came on simultaneously on my dashboard. There's no noticeable change in braking performance or handling, but the lights are definitely on and staying on.

The car has about 30,000 miles. I haven't had any recent work done on the brakes or suspension. I tried turning the car off and on again, but the lights remain illuminated. I'm worried about driving it with these safety systems potentially disabled.

Could this be a wheel speed sensor issue? Has anyone else experienced this with their CX-30? What OBD codes should I be looking for?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and Traction Control (TCS) lights illuminate simultaneously, it almost always indicates a fault within the ABS system, which also controls the TCS. The most common culprit is a faulty wheel speed sensor.

Common Causes for ABS/TCS Lights:

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one sensor fails, sends an erratic signal, or becomes dirty/damaged, the ABS/TCS system can't function correctly and will trigger warning lights. This is the most probable cause.
  2. Damaged ABS Wiring: The wiring harness leading to a wheel speed sensor can get damaged (e.g., from road debris, rodent chew).
  3. ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is usually a more expensive repair.
  4. Low Brake Fluid: While less likely to trigger both lights without other symptoms, extremely low brake fluid can sometimes affect system operation.
  5. Blown Fuse: A fuse related to the ABS system could be blown.

Relevant OBD Codes (Diagnostic Trouble Codes):

  • C0031 - C0034: These codes typically refer to specific wheel speed sensor faults (e.g., C0031 for Front Left, C0032 for Front Right, etc.). A scan tool will specify which sensor is at fault.
  • C0040 - C0044: May indicate issues with the ABS wheel speed sensor circuit.
  • Other codes related to the ABS hydraulic unit or control module may also appear, but sensor codes are most common.

Steps to Take:

  1. Scan for Codes: The first step is to get the vehicle scanned for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Most auto parts stores offer free OBD-II scanning, but you'll need a scanner capable of reading ABS-specific codes, not just generic engine codes.
  2. Visual Inspection: If a specific wheel speed sensor code is retrieved, visually inspect that sensor and its wiring for any obvious damage, dirt, or corrosion.

When to See a Shop:

  • While the car may still brake, the ABS and TCS systems are likely disabled, meaning you won't have anti-lock braking or traction control in emergency situations. This is a significant safety concern.
  • Take your CX-30 to a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. They can accurately diagnose the specific sensor or component failure using advanced diagnostic tools and perform the necessary repairs. Driving with these lights on for an extended period is not recommended.
