ABS and Traction Control Lights On - 2022 CX-30

Vehicle: 2022 Mazda CX-30 Premium

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2022 Mazda CX-30 Premium. Both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control System (TCS) warning light have illuminated on my dashboard simultaneously. There's no check engine light, and I haven't noticed any immediate changes in how the car brakes or drives.

I haven't hit any major potholes or had any recent work done on the car. Could this be a simple sensor issue, like a wheel speed sensor, or is it potentially something more serious with the ABS module itself? Is it safe to continue driving the car for a few days until I can get it into a service center?

Any insights into common causes for these lights coming on together in a newer Mazda would be helpful.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and Traction Control System (TCS) lights illuminate simultaneously, it typically indicates a fault within the vehicle's braking or stability control systems. While your car might seem to drive normally, these systems are crucial for safety, especially in emergency braking or slippery conditions.

Here are the most common causes for these lights to come on together:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensors: This is the most frequent culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one of these sensors is dirty, damaged, or has a wiring issue, the ABS/TCS system won't receive accurate data, causing the lights to illuminate. A faulty sensor can be caused by road debris, corrosion, or simply wear and tear.
  2. ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is a more expensive repair but can be diagnosed by specific fault codes.
  3. Low Brake Fluid: While less likely to trigger both lights simultaneously without a separate brake warning light, extremely low brake fluid can sometimes affect system performance.
  4. Wiring Issues: Damaged wiring or connectors leading to the wheel speed sensors or the ABS module can also cause these lights to appear.
  5. Steering Angle Sensor: In some cases, a fault with the steering angle sensor (which helps the TCS understand steering input) can trigger these lights.

Is it safe to drive?

While your car might feel normal, the ABS and TCS systems are likely disabled. This means that in an emergency braking situation, your wheels could lock up, and the traction control won't prevent wheel spin on slippery surfaces. It's generally not recommended to drive for an extended period with these lights on, especially if you anticipate adverse driving conditions. You should get it inspected as soon as possible.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately. A professional diagnostic scan tool (not a basic OBD-II scanner) is required to read ABS-specific fault codes. These codes will pinpoint the exact sensor or component that is malfunctioning, which is crucial for an accurate and efficient repair.
