Vehicle: 2022 Mazda CX-30 Premium

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2022 Mazda CX-30 Premium. Both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control System (TCS) light came on yesterday and have stayed on. There was no specific event that triggered them, just noticed them pop up during my commute.

The car seems to be driving fine, and I haven't noticed any changes in braking performance or handling, but those lights are definitely concerning. I tried turning the car off and on again, but they remain illuminated.

Has anyone experienced this with their CX-30? What could be the cause? Is there an easy fix or do I need to take it to the dealer right away?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and Traction Control System (TCS) warning lights illuminate simultaneously, it almost always indicates a fault within the Anti-lock Braking System. Since the TCS relies on the same wheel speed sensor data as the ABS, a problem in one system will typically trigger a warning for both. Given your 2022 Mazda CX-30 is relatively new, this is likely a sensor issue.

Here's a breakdown of common causes and what to do:

  1. Common Causes:

    • Wheel Speed Sensor Fault: This is the most frequent culprit. A wheel speed sensor (also known as an ABS sensor) can become dirty, damaged, or fail electronically. If one sensor isn't providing a consistent signal, the ABS/TCS system can't function properly.
    • Wiring Issues: Damaged wiring or connectors leading to a wheel speed sensor can interrupt the signal.
    • ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is usually a more expensive repair.
    • Low Brake Fluid: While less likely to trigger both lights without a brake warning light, extremely low fluid can sometimes impact system function.
    • Faulty Tone Ring: The tone ring (a toothed wheel the sensor reads) can become damaged or corroded, leading to an incorrect signal.
  2. Diagnostics (OBD-II Codes):

    • The first step is to scan the vehicle's computer for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). A standard OBD-II scanner can read basic engine codes, but an advanced scanner (often found at repair shops) is needed to read ABS-specific codes.
    • Common ABS codes related to wheel speed sensors include:
      • C1100-C1120 (and similar): Often indicate a specific wheel speed sensor circuit malfunction (e.g., C1101 for front left, C1102 for front right).
      • C0031-C0035: Generic codes for wheel speed sensor circuits.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • You should take your CX-30 to a reputable shop or Mazda dealership as soon as possible. While your brakes might feel normal, the ABS and TCS systems are disabled when these lights are on. This means you won't have anti-lock braking in an emergency stop, and your traction control won't prevent wheel spin. This significantly impacts safety, especially in adverse weather conditions. They can read the specific ABS codes and accurately diagnose and repair the issue.
