Vehicle: 2021 Mazda CX-30 Select

Hello forum,

I've been experiencing a noticeable vibration in the steering wheel of my 2021 Mazda CX-30 Select. It primarily occurs when I'm driving at highway speeds, usually above 60-65 mph. Below that, it's smooth, but once I hit those speeds, the vibration starts and it's quite annoying.

I recently had the tires rotated and balanced about 3,000 miles ago, but the issue persists. There's no pulling to one side, just the vibration. Could this be an alignment issue, or something else entirely? The car only has about 30,000 miles on it.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Steering wheel vibration at highway speeds on your 2021 Mazda CX-30 is a common complaint and can stem from several sources. While annoying, it's important to diagnose and fix to ensure driving comfort and safety.

Common Causes:

  1. Wheel Imbalance: Even if your tires were recently balanced, a weight could have fallen off, or the balance might not have been perfectly accurate. This is the most frequent cause of speed-dependent vibration.
  2. Bent Wheel Rim: Hitting a pothole or curb can bend a wheel rim, causing an imbalance that even re-balancing might not fully correct, or it might require a specialized repair.
  3. Tire Issues:
    • Uneven Tire Wear: Can cause vibration, especially if the wear pattern is severe.
    • Tire Separation: Internal damage to a tire can cause a bulge or unevenness, leading to vibration.
    • Out-of-Round Tire: A tire that isn't perfectly round can cause vibration.
  4. Loose or Worn Suspension Components: While less common for only highway speed vibration, worn ball joints, tie rod ends, or wheel bearings can contribute to steering wheel shake.
  5. Brake Rotor Runout: If the vibration also occurs or worsens when braking, warped brake rotors could be the cause.

When to See a Shop:

It's advisable to have a professional inspect your vehicle. While not immediately dangerous if it's just a minor imbalance, prolonged vibration can accelerate wear on suspension and steering components. If the vibration is severe or accompanied by pulling or noise, get it checked immediately.

What to Expect:

  • The shop will likely re-balance all four wheels, paying close attention to road force balancing if available.
  • They will inspect the tires for any damage, bulges, or uneven wear.
  • A visual inspection of suspension and steering components will be performed to check for any looseness or wear.
  • They may also check for bent rims or brake rotor runout.
