Vehicle: 2021 Mazda CX-30 Premium AWD

Hey Mazda community,

I've got a 2021 Mazda CX-30 Premium with the i-Activ AWD system, and I've started hearing a strange clunking noise. It seems to come from the rear or underneath the car, and it's most noticeable when I'm making low-speed turns, like pulling into a parking spot, or sometimes when shifting from reverse to drive.

The noise isn't constant, but it's definitely there and it's getting a bit more frequent. I'm concerned it might be an issue with the AWD system itself, perhaps the differential or driveshaft. The car only has about 30,000 miles on it, so I wouldn't expect major mechanical issues yet.

Has anyone experienced a similar clunking or popping sound with their CX-30 AWD? What was the diagnosis and fix? I want to be informed before I take it in for service.

An unusual clunking noise from the rear or underneath your 2021 Mazda CX-30 Premium AWD, especially during low-speed turns or direction changes, warrants immediate attention. This could indicate an issue with the i-Activ AWD system components.

  1. Inspect Suspension Components: While the AWD system is suspected, it's important to rule out common suspension issues first. Check for loose or worn sway bar links, bushings, control arm bushings, or even a loose shock absorber. These can produce clunking noises.
  2. Check Driveshaft and CV Joints: The driveshaft connecting the transmission to the rear differential, and the CV joints at the wheels, can be sources of clunking. Worn CV joints often make a clicking or clunking noise, especially during turns. Inspect the CV boots for tears, which can lead to grease loss and joint failure.
  3. Rear Differential Fluid: Ensure the rear differential fluid is at the correct level and in good condition. Low or degraded fluid can lead to increased wear and noise from the differential gears. A fluid change might be recommended if the fluid is old.
  4. AWD Coupling/PTU: The power transfer unit (PTU) or the AWD coupling itself could be the source. These components engage and disengage the rear wheels. Issues here can manifest as clunking or grinding noises. This is a more complex diagnosis.
  5. Causes: Common causes include worn suspension components, failing CV joints, issues with the driveshaft, or problems within the rear differential or AWD coupling unit. Sometimes, a loose exhaust component can also mimic these sounds.
  6. When to See a Shop: It's crucial to have your CX-30 inspected by a Mazda dealership or a specialist familiar with AWD systems. They can lift the vehicle, perform a thorough visual inspection, check for play in driveline components, and listen for the source of the noise under load. Since your vehicle is a 2021 model, it's likely still under warranty, making a dealership visit the best course of action for diagnosis and repair.
