Vehicle: 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring

Hey everyone, I've got a 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring with about 60k miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a really annoying squealing sound every time I hit the brakes, especially at lower speeds. It's not constant, but it's pretty loud when it happens.

On top of that, when I brake from highway speeds, I get a noticeable vibration in the steering wheel. It feels like the car is shaking a bit. I had the brakes checked about a year ago, but this is a new development.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Is it just time for new pads and rotors, or could it be something more serious? Thanks for any advice!

  1. Identify the Cause: The symptoms you're describing—squealing brakes and steering wheel vibration during braking—are classic indicators of worn brake components.
    • Squealing: Often caused by worn brake pads (the wear indicators are rubbing against the rotor), or sometimes by glazed pads/rotors, or even rust buildup if the car sits for a while.
    • Steering Wheel Vibration: This is almost always due to warped brake rotors, which can happen from excessive heat or uneven cooling. When the warped rotor spins and the caliper clamps down, it creates an inconsistent braking surface, leading to the pulsation you feel.
  2. Diagnostic Steps:
    • Have a qualified technician inspect your brake pads for wear.
    • Check the brake rotors for runout (warping) and thickness. They might need resurfacing or replacement.
    • Inspect brake calipers for proper function; sticky calipers can cause uneven wear and overheating.
    • Check wheel bearings for play, though this is less likely to cause braking-specific vibration.
  3. When to See a Shop: You should get this checked as soon as possible. While brake noise and vibration can be irritating, they also indicate reduced braking efficiency and safety. Ignoring these issues can lead to longer stopping distances and potentially more expensive repairs if components like calipers are damaged. A professional can accurately diagnose whether it's just pads and rotors or if other components are involved.
