Hey everyone, I'm having some frustrating issues with the Mazda Connect system in my 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring. Lately, it's been freezing up completely, sometimes restarting on its own while I'm driving. It's especially bad when I'm using Apple CarPlay – the screen will just go black or become unresponsive.

I've tried doing a soft reset by holding down the Mute + Nav + Back buttons, but it only helps temporarily. Is this a known issue for the 2018 models? What could be causing this, and is there a permanent fix or a software update I should be looking for?

Summary: For 2018 CX-5 Mazda Connect Freezing and CarPlay Issues, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
