Vehicle: 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

My 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring, with about 75,000 miles, has recently started acting up. It's got a noticeable rough idle, especially when I'm stopped at a light. The engine feels like it's shaking more than usual.

Yesterday, the check engine light came on. I took it to a local auto parts store to get the code read, and it came back as P0301, which I understand means a misfire on cylinder 1. Has anyone experienced this with their CX-5? What was the fix?

I'm hoping it's something simple like a spark plug, but I'm worried it could be something more serious. Any advice on what to check first would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A P0301 code indicates a misfire detected in cylinder 1. This is a common issue with several potential causes. Here's a breakdown of what to check and when to seek professional help:

  1. Check Spark Plugs and Ignition Coils:

    • Cause: Worn spark plugs or a failing ignition coil are the most common culprits for misfires. Over time, spark plugs degrade, and coils can fail, leading to an inconsistent spark.
    • Action: Inspect the spark plug in cylinder 1 for wear, fouling, or damage. If it looks bad, replace it. You can also swap the ignition coil from cylinder 1 with another cylinder (e.g., cylinder 2) and see if the misfire code moves (e.g., to P0302). If it does, the coil is faulty.
  2. Inspect Fuel Injector:

    • Cause: A clogged or faulty fuel injector in cylinder 1 can prevent the proper amount of fuel from reaching the cylinder, causing a misfire.
    • Action: While harder to diagnose without specialized tools, a mechanic can test the fuel injector's resistance and spray pattern. Sometimes, a fuel system cleaner can help with minor clogs.
  3. Look for Vacuum Leaks:

    • Cause: A vacuum leak in the intake system can introduce unmetered air, leaning out the air-fuel mixture in one or more cylinders, leading to misfires.
    • Action: Visually inspect all vacuum lines and intake manifold gaskets for cracks or signs of damage. A smoke test performed by a shop can pinpoint elusive leaks.
  4. Check Compression:

    • Cause: Low compression in cylinder 1 due to issues like worn piston rings, a faulty valve, or a blown head gasket can cause a misfire.
    • Action: This requires a compression test, best performed by a professional. This is a more serious issue.

When to See a Shop: If replacing the spark plug or swapping the ignition coil doesn't resolve the issue, or if you're uncomfortable performing these checks yourself, it's best to take your 2018 Mazda CX-5 to a qualified mechanic. Ignoring a misfire can lead to further engine damage, including catalytic converter failure due to unburnt fuel entering the exhaust system.
