Vehicle: 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I'm having some frustrating issues with my 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring. Lately, it's developed a really rough idle, especially when I'm stopped at a light or in traffic. It feels like the engine is shaking more than usual, and a couple of times it's actually stalled out completely when coming to a stop.

The check engine light came on yesterday, and I used a basic OBD scanner to pull the code. It's showing P0171, which I think means System Too Lean (Bank 1). I'm not super mechanically inclined, but I'm worried this could be something serious.

Has anyone else experienced this with their CX-5? What should I be looking for, or is this something I absolutely need to take to the dealership right away? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Sarah, it sounds like you're dealing with a common issue that can have several root causes, especially with the P0171 code. This code indicates that your engine's computer (ECU) is detecting too much air or not enough fuel in the exhaust, leading to a 'lean' condition on Bank 1.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to do:

  1. Check for Vacuum Leaks:

    • Cause: A vacuum leak introduces unmetered air into the engine, causing the lean condition. Common culprits include cracked vacuum hoses, a faulty PCV valve, or a leaking intake manifold gasket.
    • Action: Visually inspect all accessible vacuum lines for cracks or disconnections. You might hear a high-pitched hissing sound if there's a significant leak.
  2. Inspect MAF Sensor:

    • Cause: A dirty or faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor can send incorrect air intake readings to the ECU, leading it to inject less fuel than needed.
    • Action: You can try carefully cleaning the MAF sensor with a specialized MAF sensor cleaner (do NOT use other cleaners). If the problem persists, the sensor might need replacement.
  3. Fuel System Issues:

    • Cause: Insufficient fuel delivery can also cause a lean condition. This could be due to a clogged fuel filter, a failing fuel pump, or dirty fuel injectors.
    • Action: While less common on newer vehicles, a clogged fuel filter is possible. Fuel pump diagnosis usually requires specialized tools. Dirty injectors can sometimes be helped by a quality fuel system cleaner, but severe cases require professional cleaning or replacement.
  4. Oxygen Sensor (O2 Sensor):

    • Cause: A failing upstream O2 sensor can give inaccurate readings, causing the ECU to incorrectly adjust fuel trim.
    • Action: This is less likely to be the primary cause of P0171 and rough idle/stalling, but it's part of the diagnostic process.

When to See a Shop: Given that your vehicle is stalling, it's important to address this promptly.

  • If a visual inspection for vacuum leaks or MAF sensor cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, or if you're uncomfortable performing these checks yourself, it's highly recommended to take your 2018 Mazda CX-5 to a qualified mechanic or Mazda dealership.
  • They have diagnostic tools to accurately pinpoint the source of the lean condition, test fuel pressure, and evaluate sensor readings. Continuing to drive with a severe lean condition can potentially lead to long-term engine damage, especially to catalytic converters.
  • Mention the P0171 code and the symptoms (rough idle, stalling) to the technician.
