Vehicle: 2018 Mazda 6 Touring

Hi all,

I'm having a really annoying issue with the infotainment system in my 2018 Mazda 6 Touring. It frequently freezes up, sometimes for a few seconds, and then often completely reboots itself. This happens randomly, whether I'm using Apple CarPlay, the radio, or just the navigation.

It's become quite frustrating, especially when I'm relying on navigation. I've tried doing a soft reset (holding down the Mute + Nav + Back buttons), but the problem always comes back. I also made sure my phone's software is updated, so I don't think it's a CarPlay specific issue.

Could this be a software bug, a faulty module, or perhaps a loose wiring connection somewhere? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The infotainment system in your 2018 Mazda 6 freezing and rebooting is a known issue that can stem from several electrical and software-related causes. It's certainly frustrating when a core vehicle function becomes unreliable.

Here are the common culprits and steps for diagnosis:

  1. Software Glitch/Corruption:

    • Cause: Sometimes the operating system of the Mazda Connect unit can become corrupted or encounter bugs, leading to instability.
    • Solution: Ensure your Mazda Connect software is up-to-date. Dealerships can check for and apply the latest firmware updates. Sometimes a factory reset (which is more involved than a soft reset) can resolve persistent software issues.
  2. Loose or Corroded Connections:

    • Cause: The infotainment unit relies on various electrical connections for power, ground, and data. A loose or corroded connector can cause intermittent power loss or data transmission errors, leading to reboots.
    • Inspection: This would involve a technician inspecting the wiring harness connections to the head unit, the CMU (Connectivity Master Unit), and possibly the display itself. Vibrations over time can loosen connections.
  3. Faulty CMU (Connectivity Master Unit):

    • Cause: The CMU is the 'brain' of the Mazda Connect system. If it's failing internally, it can cause erratic behavior, freezing, and reboots. This is a common hardware failure point for these systems.
    • Diagnosis: A technician can run diagnostics on the CMU to determine its health. If it's faulty, replacement is often the only solution.
  4. Power Supply Issue:

    • Cause: An inconsistent power supply to the infotainment system, perhaps due to a failing voltage regulator within the unit or an issue in the vehicle's electrical system, could cause reboots.
    • Check: A technician can monitor the voltage supplied to the unit.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): While there might not be a generic OBD-II code for this, a Mazda-specific diagnostic tool can often pull codes from the infotainment system's modules, which can point directly to a communication error or internal module fault.

When to See a Shop: Given the persistence of the issue and the complexity of infotainment systems, it's best to take your Mazda 6 to a Mazda dealership or a reputable automotive electronics specialist. They have the necessary diagnostic tools to read specific module codes, perform software updates, and accurately diagnose whether it's a software glitch, a wiring issue, or a failing hardware component like the CMU.
