Vehicle: 2020 Mazda 3 Premium

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on my 2020 Mazda 3 Premium (automatic transmission). Lately, I've noticed a significant hesitation when accelerating from a stop, almost like it's struggling to find the right gear. It's not consistent, but it's happening more frequently.

Also, the shifts, especially from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, feel much harder than they used to be. Sometimes there's a noticeable jerk. There's no check engine light on yet, but the driving experience is definitely degraded.

Has anyone with a newer Mazda 3 experienced similar transmission issues? Could it be a fluid issue, or something more serious? Any thoughts on what might be causing this would be helpful.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Transmission hesitation and hard shifts in a relatively new vehicle like your 2020 Mazda 3 can be concerning, even without a check engine light. Here's what could be happening:

  1. Common Causes for Transmission Issues:

    • Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: Even in newer vehicles, fluid levels can drop or become contaminated over time, especially if there's a small leak or if the fluid hasn't been serviced according to the manufacturer's schedule (though 2020 is quite new for this). Incorrect fluid type can also cause problems.
    • Transmission Control Module (TCM) Software: Sometimes, these issues can be resolved with a software update for the Transmission Control Module. Manufacturers release updates to refine shift logic and address known quirks.
    • Solenoid Issues: The solenoids inside the transmission control the flow of fluid to engage different gears. A faulty solenoid can lead to delayed or harsh shifts.
    • Clutch Pack Wear (Automatic): While less common in a 2020 model, excessive wear on the internal clutch packs can cause slipping and harsh engagement.
    • Sensor Malfunctions: Sensors like the vehicle speed sensor or transmission input/output speed sensors can send incorrect data to the TCM, leading to improper shift points.
  2. What to Do:

    • Check Fluid Level (if accessible): Consult your owner's manual for the correct procedure to check your transmission fluid level and condition. Note that many modern transmissions are sealed and require special tools or procedures.
    • Document Symptoms: Keep a detailed log of when the issues occur, under what conditions (cold start, hot engine, specific speeds/gears), and how severe they are.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Promptly: Since this is a critical drivetrain component, it's best to have your Mazda 3 inspected by a Mazda dealership or a reputable transmission specialist as soon as possible. They have the diagnostic tools to read specific transmission codes (even if the check engine light isn't on for general engine issues) and can check for any available software updates. Addressing these issues early can prevent more extensive and costly repairs down the line.
