Vehicle: 2020 Mazda 3 Premium

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing some concerning issues with my 2020 Mazda 3 Premium, which has about 45,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a rough idle, especially when the car is warm and stopped at a light. It's not violent, but definitely noticeable and feels like a slight vibration.

Additionally, I'm getting a slight hesitation or stumble during acceleration, particularly when I'm trying to accelerate from a low speed or after coasting. There's no check engine light on yet, which is making it harder to diagnose. I've tried running a tank of premium fuel, but it hasn't made a difference.

Could this be spark plugs, fuel injectors, or something else entirely? Any ideas on what I should check first before taking it in?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough idle and hesitation without a check engine light can be tricky to diagnose, but it often points to issues with the fuel, air, or ignition systems. Since your 2020 Mazda 3 is relatively new, a systematic approach is best.

Common Causes:

  1. Ignition System: Worn spark plugs, faulty ignition coils, or bad spark plug wires (less common on newer cars) can cause misfires leading to rough idle and hesitation.
  2. Fuel System: Clogged fuel injectors, a failing fuel pump, or a dirty fuel filter can restrict fuel delivery.
  3. Air Intake System: A dirty mass airflow (MAF) sensor, a clogged air filter, or vacuum leaks can disrupt the air-fuel mixture.
  4. Throttle Body: A dirty or malfunctioning electronic throttle body can cause inconsistent idle and poor throttle response.
  5. PCV Valve: A stuck or clogged PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve can create vacuum leaks or affect engine breathing.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Air Filter: Ensure your engine air filter is clean and not obstructed.
  2. Inspect MAF Sensor: Carefully clean the MAF sensor with specialized MAF sensor cleaner. Do not use other solvents.
  3. Listen for Vacuum Leaks: With the engine running, listen for any hissing sounds around the intake manifold, vacuum lines, and PCV valve. You can also use a can of unlit propane or carb cleaner (with extreme caution) to spray around these areas; if the idle changes, you've found a leak.
  4. Consider Spark Plugs: Given the mileage, spark plugs might be due for inspection or replacement, especially if they're past their recommended service interval.
  5. Fuel System Cleaner: Try a high-quality fuel system cleaner that targets fuel injectors.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the issue persists after checking these basic items.
  • If you notice a check engine light comes on, even intermittently.
  • If the hesitation becomes more pronounced or the rough idle worsens significantly.
  • A professional can perform a fuel pressure test, check ignition coil resistance, and use diagnostic software to monitor live engine data for more precise identification of the problem.
