Vehicle: 2022 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition

Hi all,

My 2022 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition is having an issue with its power liftgate. It's becoming very unreliable. Sometimes it works perfectly, opening and closing with the button on the key fob or inside the car. Other times, it just beeps a couple of times and doesn't move, or it starts to move and then stops halfway.

There are no error messages on the dash, and I've checked for obstructions, but the cargo area is clear. Is this a common problem with the newer CX-5s? What could be causing this intermittent behavior? It's really inconvenient when I have my hands full.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent power liftgate operation on newer vehicles like your 2022 Mazda CX-5 can be a frustrating issue, often pointing to sensor, motor, or wiring problems. While not universally common, these systems do have specific points of failure.

Here's a breakdown of common causes and troubleshooting steps:

  1. Obstruction Sensors: Even if you don't see a visible obstruction, the safety sensors (often located along the edges of the hatch) can be overly sensitive or dirty. Try gently cleaning the rubber seals and the areas where the hatch closes to ensure no debris is interfering.
  2. Liftgate Struts/Motor: The power liftgate relies on motorized struts. If one of these motors is starting to fail or has a weak spot, it can cause intermittent operation. This often manifests as the liftgate struggling or stopping mid-movement.
  3. Wiring Harness Issues: Over time, or due to manufacturing defects, the wiring harness that runs through the hinge area of the liftgate can develop a break or a loose connection. This can cause intermittent power to the motor or sensors.
  4. Control Module/Programming: The liftgate has its own control module. Sometimes, a software glitch or a need for recalibration can cause these issues. Your dealership can check for any relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or perform a recalibration.
  5. Key Fob Battery: While less likely if it also fails with the interior button, a weak key fob battery can sometimes cause intermittent remote functions.

Troubleshooting You Can Try:

  • Manual Override/Reset: Try opening and closing the liftgate manually a few times if possible (check your owner's manual for the procedure to disengage the power function). This can sometimes reset the system.
  • Battery Disconnect: Disconnecting your car's main battery for 15-30 minutes can sometimes reset various electronic modules, including the liftgate control module. Be aware this might reset other settings.

When to See a Shop: Given the intermittent nature and the complexity of these systems, it's best to take your CX-5 to a Mazda dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to read codes from the liftgate control module, test the motors, and inspect the wiring harness for continuity. Since your vehicle is relatively new, it should still be under warranty, making diagnosis and repair covered.
