Vehicle: 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

My check engine light just came on in my 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring. I used a basic OBD-II scanner and it pulled a P0420 code: 'Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)'. The car seems to be driving fine, no noticeable loss of power or strange noises, and fuel economy hasn't really changed.

I just had my oil changed last month, but nothing else major has been done recently. I usually fill up with regular unleaded from the same station. Could this be something simple, or am I looking at a big catalytic converter replacement? Any advice on what to check first would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0420 code on your 2018 Mazda CX-5 indicates that the catalytic converter's efficiency is below the manufacturer's specified threshold. While it often points to a failing catalytic converter, it's crucial to diagnose thoroughly before replacing such an expensive part. Here's a breakdown of common causes and diagnostic steps:

Common Causes of P0420:

  1. Faulty Oxygen (O2) Sensors: The upstream and downstream O2 sensors monitor the catalytic converter's efficiency. A failing downstream O2 sensor can incorrectly report low efficiency, or a faulty upstream sensor can send incorrect fuel mixture data, affecting the converter's performance.
  2. Exhaust Leaks: Leaks in the exhaust system before or near the catalytic converter can allow unmetered air in, confusing the O2 sensors and triggering the code.
  3. Engine Misfires or Rich/Lean Conditions: Persistent engine problems like misfires, excessive oil consumption, or incorrect fuel mixture can damage the catalytic converter over time by sending unburnt fuel or contaminants into it.
  4. Catalytic Converter Failure: Over time, catalytic converters can degrade internally, losing their ability to efficiently convert harmful exhaust gases.

Diagnostic Steps You Can Take:

  1. Inspect for Exhaust Leaks: Visually check the exhaust system for any cracks, holes, or loose connections, especially around the catalytic converter and O2 sensors. You might hear a hissing sound when the engine is running.
  2. Monitor O2 Sensor Data: If you have an advanced OBD-II scanner that can display live data, monitor the readings from your upstream (Bank 1 Sensor 1) and downstream (Bank 1 Sensor 2) O2 sensors. The upstream sensor should fluctuate rapidly, while the downstream sensor should show a relatively steady, lower voltage if the catalytic converter is working correctly.
  3. Check for Other Codes: Sometimes, a P0420 can be a symptom of another underlying engine issue. Ensure no other pending or active codes are present.

When to See a Shop:

If you've checked for exhaust leaks and can't diagnose the O2 sensor data yourself, it's best to take your Mazda to a qualified mechanic. They have specialized diagnostic tools and expertise to accurately pinpoint the cause of the P0420 code. Ignoring this code can lead to increased emissions and potentially more severe engine damage if the underlying cause is not addressed.
